Why is Atripla prescribed?

Atripla (Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir) is a combination of three drugs: efavirenz (EFV), a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), and emtricitabine (FTC) both nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors for HIV-1. It is authorized as a full treatment regimen or in combination with other antiretroviral medications for the management of HIV-1 infection in adults and children who weigh 40 kg or more.

What does it do?

Atripla helps reduce the amount of HIV in your body, allowing your immune system to function better. This lowers the risk of HIV-related complications, such as new infections or cancer, and can improve your quality of life. Efavirenz is part of a class called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), while emtricitabine and tenofovir are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). While this treatment can manage HIV infection, it is not a cure. To reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others, it’s important to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

How should I take it?

Take this medication orally on an empty stomach, usually once daily at bedtime, as directed by your doctor. Taking it at bedtime helps minimize some of the side effects.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.

What are the special precautions before taking Atripla?

It’s important to have regular check-ups with your doctor. Discuss any new symptoms with your healthcare provider, as you will need important blood tests while taking this medication. This medicine may cause serious skin reactions, which can develop weeks or months after starting treatment. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience fevers or flu-like symptoms along with a rash. The rash may start red or purple, then develop into blisters or peeling skin. You may also notice swelling of the lips, face, or lymph nodes in your neck or underarms. Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:
  • Allergic reactions Atripla
  • Bone problems
  • Heart disease
  • History of drug or alcohol abuse
  • History of depression or other mental health issues
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Seizures

HIV is transmitted through sexual or blood contact. Talk to your doctor about ways to prevent the spread of HIV and if you have hepatitis B, consult your doctor before stopping this medication, as stopping it may worsen hepatitis B symptoms.

Birth control pills may not work effectively while taking this medication. Talk to your doctor about using an additional form of contraception. Women who can become pregnant should use a reliable barrier method, such as a condom or diaphragm, along with their birth control.

Does it have any side effects?

Like all drugs, this medication may cause undesirable side effects in addition to its intended effects. While not everyone experiences these side effects, some may require medical attention. Contact your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Blistering or loosening of the skin
  • Chills
  • Clay-colored stools
  • Ear congestion
  • Headache
  • Loss of voice
  • Swelling of the feet or lower legs
  • Severe skin rash
  • Sore throat
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin

Some side effects may not require medical attention and may go away as your body adjusts to the medication. Your healthcare provider can offer advice on how to prevent or manage some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects persist or become bothersome, or if you have concerns about them, consult your healthcare provider:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Decreased awareness or responsiveness
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Mutism
  • Mimicking speech or movements
  • Trouble sleeping or severe sleepiness
Other side effects not listed here may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other unusual effects, reach out to your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

If you believe you have taken an overdose of this medicine, immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

This medication should only be used during pregnancy when necessary. It can help reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby, and Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir may be part of that treatment. Talk to your doctor about the potential risks and benefits. Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
