  • Description

Why is Duphaston prescribed?

Duphaston (Dydrogesterone) is a hormonal medication that simulates the action of the female hormone progesterone. It is used to treat various menstrual issues, endometriosis including abnormal menstrual bleeding or pain dysmenorrhea, irregular periods, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which involves physical and emotional changes that some women experience days before their period.

What does it do?

Duphaston is used to address issues that arise when your body does not produce enough of its own progestogen hormone, which is typically made in the ovaries from puberty until menopause. The progestogen in Duphaston, dydrogesterone, serves to replace this deficient hormone. In the body, progestogen is normally balanced with the primary female hormone, estrogen. Thus, it alleviates the unpleasant symptoms linked to progesterone deficiencies, including menstrual pain, premenstrual syndrome, infertility, irregular periods, and menopausal symptoms.

How should I take it?

Take Duphaston at the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Take this tablet with or without food and should not be crushed or chewed.

What if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose less than 12 hours, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is more than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular schedule. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Duphaston?

If you have the following conditions listed below, consult your doctor or a pharmacist before taking this medication.

  • Depression: it should be used with caution if you have depression as it may exacerbate your condition.
  • Liver problems: it should be used with caution if you have liver issues, as it may aggravate your condition.
  • Porphyria: it should be used with caution if you have porphyria a condition characterized by abnormalities in the production of heme, an oxygen-carrying chemical, due to the buildup of porphyrins in the body, as it may worsen your condition.
  • If you notice unexpected vaginal bleeding or spotting, it usually isn’t a reason for concern, particularly in the first few months of taking Duphaston. However, you should contact your doctor right away if the bleeding or spotting:
  • Persists for more than a few months
  • Occurs after you have been on treatment for a period
  • Lasts even after treatment has been stopped
  • Do not take Duphaston if any of the below listed conditions apply to you. If you are uncertain, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
  • Have a tumor that is exacerbated by progestogens (such as meningioma)
  • Have irregular or unusually heavy menstrual bleeding that your doctor is not already aware of
  • Have an allergy (hypersensitivity) to any of the components of this medication
  • Does it have any side effects?

Discontinue Duphaston and consult a doctor immediately or go to the hospital if you notice any of the following. You may require an urgent medical attention.
  • Swelling of the skin around the face and throat which may lead to difficulty in breathing (angioedema)
  • Liver problems: signs may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), a general feeling of unwellness accompanied by abdominal pain, or other liver-related symptoms.
  • Allergic reactions: symptoms may include difficulty breathing or systemic reactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or low blood pressure.
  • Painful swelling in your leg, sudden chest pain, or shortness of breath. These may indicate the presence of a blood clot.
  • Chest pain that extends to your arm or neck. This may be a sign of a heart attack.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Tenderness of breasts
  • Painful or heavy periods
  • Periods happening less often than normal
  • Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking or have recently taken any other medications. This includes over-the-counter medicines and herbal supplements. These medications may reduce the effectiveness of Duphaston and may lead to bleeding or spotting.
  • Phenobarbital
  • Phenytoin
  • Carbamazepine
  • Rifampicin
  • Rifabutin
  • Efavirenz
  • Ritonavir
  • Nelfinavir
  • St John’s Wort
  • How should I store it?

Keep Dupahston at room temperature and out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you have taken this medicine more than the prescribed dose, consult your doctor immediately or contact your nearest emergency department.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Duphaston should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed, as advised by a doctor. This medicine is not recommended for breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
