Why is Glucovance prescribed?

Glucovance is a combination of two oral medications, Glyburide and Metformin HCl, designed to help manage blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes who do not require daily insulin injections. It is not intended for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.

What does it do?

Glucovance (Glyburide/ Metformin) helps control blood sugar by increasing insulin levels, improving the effectiveness of insulin, reducing the sugar absorbed from food and drinks, and lowering the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

How should I take it?

Take Glucovance twice a day with meals and make sure to stay well-hydrated while using it. Note that the maximum dose is 20 mg/2,000 mg.

If you experience vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever, contact your doctor. These symptoms can cause severe dehydration, which may be risky while taking Glucovance.

What if I missed a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you remember, but if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Glucovance?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not use Glucovance if you have:

  • Severe kidney disease
  • If you are also taking bosentan (for pulmonary arterial hypertension)
  • Metabolic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis (contact your doctor for treatment)

Inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease or stroke
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency

There is a risk of lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood, which may be more likely if you have chronic alcoholism, certain medical conditions, or if you are over 65. Discuss your risk with your doctor.

Follow your doctor’s advice if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Properly managing diabetes during pregnancy is crucial, as high blood sugar can lead to complications for both the mother and baby. You may need to temporarily stop taking Glucovance near your due date.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

    Serious side effects may include:
  • Heart issues: swelling, shortness of breath
  • Severe hypoglycemia: extreme weakness, difficulty speaking, seizures
  • Lactic acidosis: unusual muscle paindizziness, feeling cold, or extreme weakness/tiredness
    Common side effects may include:
  • Low blood sugar
  • Nausea, upset stomach
  • Headache
This is not a complete list of side effects. For medical advice regarding side effects, consult your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including prescription drugs, vitamins, herbal products, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.

Particularly, discuss with your doctor if you're using any of the following before starting glyburide/metformin:

  • Bosentan (for pulmonary arterial hypertension)
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., zonisamide, methimazole)
  • Colesevelam (for high cholesterol and blood sugar from type 2 diabetes)
  • Diabetes medications, especially insulin or those that increase insulin levels

Other medications can affect your blood sugar and interfere with Glyburide/Metformin. Always talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medicine, as you may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely.

Some medications can lower your blood sugar, enhancing the effect of Glyburide/Metformin. Again, consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

This list may not include all possible interactions. Always check with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medications.

How should I store it?

Store Glucovance at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you have taken too much Glucovance, seek emergency medical help immediately. An overdose may lead to severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

If you're taking this medication during pregnancy, your doctor may switch you to insulin at least two weeks before your expected delivery to reduce the risk of low blood sugar in your newborn. This drug can pass into breast milk in small amounts, so it's important to consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
