Why is Inspra prescribed?

Inspra (Eplerenone) is an aldosterone receptor antagonist used as an antihypertensive medication. It helps treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and is also prescribed for managing congestive heart failure, particularly following a heart attack.

What does it do?

Inspra helps your kidneys eliminate excess fluid and salt from your bloodstream through urine, while maintaining healthy potassium levels. This medication is part of a class known as diuretics.

How should I take it?

Take this drug orally. The initial treatment dose is 25mg then titration dose of 50mg once daily taken with food or without it. Avoid consuming grapefruit juice while using this medication.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Inspra, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next one as scheduled. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Inspra?

Inform your healthcare provider about all your health conditions and any medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, or supplements you are taking. This helps them assess whether Eplerenone is appropriate for you.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Diabetes with protein in the urine
  • If you are following a special diet, such as a low-salt diet, and using salt substitutes
  • High potassium levels: Eplerenone should not be used if you have elevated potassium in your blood. Your provider may test your potassium levels to ensure it’s safe for you to take this medication.
  • Kidney function: Eplerenone should not be used if your kidneys are not functioning properly. Your provider may conduct tests to assess kidney health.

Inspra may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid operating machinery, driving, or activities that require focus until you know how it affects you. If you're older, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness or fainting. Alcohol can interfere with this medication, so it's best to avoid alcoholic beverages.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Less serious side effects may include:
  • Dizziness or headache
  • Irregular periods or spotting
  • Unexplained breast tissue growth
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Changes in sex drive or performance
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, swelling of the tongue, face, or throat.
  • High potassium: Muscle weakness, irregular or fast heartbeat.
  • Kidney problems: Decreased urine
This list may not cover all potential side effects. Contact your doctor for advice on any side effects you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Do not take Inspra with certain medications or substances, as serious interactions may occur. These includes:

  • Some antibiotics (e.g., Clarithromycin, Chloramphenicol)
  • Antifungals (e.g., Ketoconazole, Itraconazole)
  • HIV/AIDS medications (e.g., Ritonavir)
  • Diuretics that increase potassium (e.g., Amiloride)
  • Potassium supplements or salts
  • Grapefruit or grapefruit juice
  • Other specific drugs (e.g., Boceprevir, Ribociclib)
Inspra may also interact with:
  • Certain blood pressure medications (e.g., Enalapril, Valsartan)
  • NSAIDs (e.g., Ibuprofen, Naproxen)
  • Lithium, Erythromycin, and Fluconazole
This is not a complete list. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature, around 25°C (77°F). Dispose of any unused medication after it has expired.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much eplerenone, seek medical help immediately or going to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: The effects of Eplerenone on pregnancy and unborn babies are not known. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: It is unclear whether Eplerenone passes into breast milk. Notify your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, and they will guide you on whether it’s safe to take eplerenone while nursing.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
