Why is Lupron Depot prescribed?

Leuprolide is a synthetic hormone used to manage symptoms of prostate cancer. It can also be prescribed to treat children experiencing early puberty and may be used for other hormone-related conditions.

What does it do?

Lupron Depot is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that first stimulates and then suppresses the pituitary gland’s release of hormones, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This causes a significant decrease in the production of sex hormones, testosterone in men and estrogen in women, through a process called chemical or medical castration.

How should I take it?

Lupron Depot is administered by injection under the skin or into a muscle. You will receive guidance on how to properly prepare and administer the medication. Use it exactly as prescribed, taking doses at consistent intervals. Do not exceed the recommended frequency.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Lupron Depot, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Lupron Depot?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Tobacco use
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Spinal cord metastasis
  • Pain or difficulty urinating
  • Heart disease or a history of heart attack
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
  • Breastfeeding

During the first week of treatment, your symptoms may temporarily worsen before improving. You might experience hot flashes, increased bone pain, more difficulty urinating, or worsening nerve symptoms.

Discuss these effects with your doctor, as some may improve with continued use of the medication.

Female patients may have menstrual bleeding or spotting during the first two months of treatment. If this persists, contact your healthcare provider.

This medication may raise blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about whether any adjustments to your diet or medications are needed.

    • QT interval prolongation: Androgen deprivation therapy can prolong the QT interval, which affects heart rhythm. Your doctor will assess your risks before starting treatment.
    • Seizure risk: People with a history of seizures, brain disorders, epilepsy, or those taking certain medications (like bupropion or SSRIs) may have an increased seizure risk. Seizures can also occur without prior risk factors. Contact your doctor immediately if a seizure occurs.

    • Severe skin reactions: Rare but serious skin conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis can occur. Get urgent medical attention if you develop widespread red or purple rash, blistering, or peeling skin.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
