Why is Synvisc One prescribed?

Synvisc One (hylan G-F 20) is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who have failed to achieve adequate relief from conservative non-pharmacologic measures and simple analgesics.

What does it do?

Synvisc One is a viscosupplement, a crosslinked, high-molecular-weight hyaluronan fluid derived from chicken combs. When injected into the knee joint, it supplements depleted synovial fluid, restoring its natural lubrication and shock-absorbing properties. This improved joint biomechanics helps reduce pain and enhance mobility.

How should I take it?

Synvisc One is administered as a single 6 mL intra-articular injection into the affected knee by a healthcare professional using strict aseptic technique. Before injection, excess synovial fluid should be withdrawn using a separate syringe.

The procedure requires an 18–20 gauge needle, securely attached to the luer hub to prevent leakage. After injection, rest the knee and avoid high-impact or prolonged weight-bearing activities for at least 48 hours (such as jogging, jumping, or standing for over an hour). Applying ice may help alleviate mild pain or swelling.

What if I missed a dose?

Synvisc One is a single-dose regimen. If you miss your injection appointment, contact your healthcare provider promptly to reschedule. Unlike multi-injection courses, there is no cumulative “series” to complete, so timely administration of this one-time injection is key to achieving its therapeutic benefit.

What are the special precautions before taking Synvisc One

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history. Before taking Synvisc One, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Do not use if you’re allergic to hyaluronan products, avian proteins (eggs, feathers, poultry), or any component of the device.
  • Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have blood clots, or an allergy to birds, feathers, or egg products.
  • This medication is contraindicated in patients with active knee joint infections or skin infections at the injection site.
  • The safety and effectiveness with other intra-articular injectables or in joints other than the knee have not been established.
  • Avoid disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts such as benzalkonium chloride, which can precipitate hyaluronan.
  • If you are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor to understand the potential risks and benefits of taking this medication.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Nausea
  • Stiffness, swelling or “puffiness” at the injection site
  • Muscle pain
  • Trouble walking
  • Numbness or tingling around the knee
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe knee pain or a large joint effusion
  • Joint infections
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Synvisc One (Hylan G-F 20) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Before taking Synvisc One, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Benzalkonium chloride (topical)
  • Cetylpyridinium (topical)
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Synvisc One with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Synvisc One should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep the medication in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Synvisc One (Hylan G-F 20), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or fluid buildup in the knee.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

The safety of Synvisc One (Hylan G-F 20) for pregnant and breastfeeding women has not been established. It is unknown whether Synvisc can cause fetal harm or affect reproductive capacity. Since there is no definitive safety data, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider to weigh the potential risks and benefits before receiving Synvisc-One injections.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
