Why is Alesse prescribed?

Alesse (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) is an oral contraceptive that combines the female hormones estrogen and progestin.

What does it do?

Levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol prevents pregnancy through several mechanisms. Primarily, it prevents ovulation. Additionally, it alters the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and it changes the uterine lining (endometrium), reducing the likelihood of a fertilized egg implanting.

How should I take it?

To help reduce nausea, it can be taken with food. Follow the instructions on the prescription label usually 1 tablet for a 28 day cycle. Take it at the same time each day and do not take more than the prescribed dose.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, consult the patient information sheet provided with your medication for guidance. Missing more than one pill may reduce the effectiveness of the medication, and you may need to use an alternative form of birth control.

What are the special precautions before taking Alesse?

Inform your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions and any prescription and other supplements you are taking and be sure to discuss the following conditions:

  • Immobility: If you are unable to move for an extended period, such as being immobile, inform your healthcare provider. Taking levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol while immobile may increase your risk of blood clots.
  • Gallbladder Issues: If you have or have had gallbladder problems, including jaundice, cholestasis, or a history of cholestasis, especially during pregnancy, inform your provider. This medication can increase the risk of cholestasis and jaundice, worsening gallbladder issues.
  • Skin Conditions: If you have experienced dark patches of skin (chloasma), particularly during pregnancy, let your healthcare provider know. Levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol can increase the likelihood of developing chloasma, and you should avoid sun exposure and tanning booths if you have had this condition.
  • Angioedema: If you have hereditary angioedema, which causes swelling in areas like your lips, face, tongue, or throat, talk to your healthcare provider. Levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol may worsen angioedema or increase your risk of developing it.
  • Depression: If you have a history of depression, inform your provider. This medication may exacerbate depression symptoms.
  • Diabetes: If you have prediabetes or diabetes, let your healthcare provider know, as levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol may raise your blood sugar levels.
  • High Triglycerides: If you have high triglyceride levels or a family history of high triglycerides, inform your healthcare provider. This medication may elevate triglyceride levels and increase the risk of pancreatitis. Your healthcare provider will determine if this medication is suitable for you.
  • Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions.

Side effects that typically don’t require immediate medical attention (but report them if they persist or are bothersome):

  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Dark patches of skin on the face or other sun-exposed areas
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or spotting
  • Nausea

    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Allergic reactions: Skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Blood clots: Pain, swelling, or warmth in the leg, shortness of breath, chest pain
  • Gallbladder issues: Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fever

  • Unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor
  • Mood changes: Worsening mood or feelings of depression
  • This list may not cover all possible side effects. Contact your doctor for advice on any side effect you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:
  • Antibiotics (Ampicillin,Tetracyclines)
  • Barbiturates
  • Dasabuvir
  • Ombitasvir
  • Paritaprevir
  • Phenytoin
  • Ritonavir
  • St. John's Wort
  • This list may not include all possible interactions. Be sure to provide your healthcare provider with a complete list of all medications.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep it out of reach of children. Dispose of any expired or unused medication properly.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose specially bleeding may occur in females, immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: Do not take levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, stop taking it immediately and contact your healthcare provider.

Breastfeeding: Levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol can pass into breast milk. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. This medication may reduce milk production, and your healthcare provider will advise you on whether it's safe to continue using it while breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
