Why is Amerge prescribed?

Naratriptan (Amerge) is prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura (warning symptoms that manifest before or during the headache). It does not prevent your headaches from occurring or lessen the number of headaches you may have. It is also not used to treat cluster headaches (short, severely painful headaches that affect one side of your head or around one eye).

What does it do?

Migraine headaches are recurring headaches that are usually felt on one side of your head. The pain may feel like a throbbing or pulsing sensation with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity. Migraine headaches can last from several hours to days.

Naratriptan is classified as a selective serotonin receptor agonist and it prevents the widening of the blood vessels surrounding the brain and inhibits the release of substances that cause pain and other symptoms of migraine.

How should I take it?

Amerge is available in 2.5mg tablets intended for oral administration. Swallow the tablet as a whole and do not crush, chew, break it in half, or tamper the tablet in any way.

Take Amerge exactly as your doctor instructed and do not make alterations in the dosage or frequency. Your headache may worsen if you take excessive amounts of the medication.

You may be asked to stay in a hospital or your doctor’s clinic when taking your first dose of Amerge to check for any adverse reactions you may have to the medication.

Inform your doctor if your symptoms subside but eventually return or do not improve at all after taking Amerge. Do not take another tablet unless instructed by your doctor.

If you have more than four migraine headaches in a month while taking Amerge, inform your doctor.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist for any concerns you may have when taking Amerge.

What if I missed a dose?

Amerge is taken only when it is needed and does not have a daily dosing schedule. However, if your symptoms do not improve after taking Amerge, inform your doctor.

What are the special precautions before using Amerge?

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Naratriptan, any component of Amerge, and other medications.

Inform your doctor if you have or ever had heart disease, heart attack, stroke, “mini-stroke”, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, circulation problems, severe liver or kidney disease, and bloody diarrhea with stomach pain (ischemic bowel disease). Taking Naratriptan may not be suitable for you in these cases and should be discussed with your doctor.

Tell your doctor if you smoke, are overweight, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, menopause, and if you have relatives who have diabetes or stroke.

Taking Naratripan can cause your blood pressure to rise to threatening levels. You may need to monitor your blood pressure while taking this medication.

Taking Naratriptan may cause drowsiness. Avoid doing activities that require your full attention such as driving or operating machinery until you feel it is safe to do so.

It is not known if Naratriptan is excreted in human milk and if it will cause harm to the breastfeeding infant. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding an infant.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey, and Singapore.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
