Why is Aralen prescribed?

Aralen (Chloroquine phosphate) is an antimalarial medication used to both treat and prevent malaria. It is also prescribed for infections caused by amoebae.

What does it do?

Aralen (Chloroquine phosphate) works by disrupting the growth of parasites in red blood cells, primarily targeting the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium. It blocks the parasite's ability to use heme, a crucial molecule, leading to a buildup of toxic substances that eventually kill the parasite. Beyond treating malaria, Aralen is also effective against other parasitic infections, like those caused by amoebae, by interfering with their cellular functions.

How should I take it?

Take this medication orally, usually with food to avoid stomach upset, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage and duration of treatment depends on your medical condition and how you respond to the medication.

For malaria prevention: Aralen Phosphate is typically taken once a week, on the same day each week. Start taking it two weeks before traveling to a malaria-prone area, continue during your stay, and keep taking it for at least 8 weeks after leaving the area.

For malaria treatment: Aralen Phosphate is usually given as a single high dose, followed by smaller doses over the next two days.

For amebiasis treatment: Aralen Phosphate is initially given in a high dose for 2 days, then followed by a smaller dose for 2 to 3 weeks. Additional medications may be prescribed to prevent further infection. In children, Aralen Phosphate doses are based on weight, and the dosage may need to be adjusted if the child gains or loses weight.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and just take the scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.

What are the special precautions before taking Aralen?

Aralen Phosphate can have serious effects on your heart, especially when combined with certain other medications. Seek emergency medical help if you experience rapid or pounding heartbeats along with sudden dizziness, as it may indicate a potential issue.

Long-term use or high doses of Aralen Phosphate can lead to permanent damage to the retina, possibly causing vision problems. If you have a history of retinal issues or vision changes, you may not be able to use this medication.

If you experience blurred vision, difficulty focusing, distorted vision, blind spots, trouble reading, cloudy vision, or increased sensitivity to light, stop taking Aralen Phosphate and contact your doctor immediately.

Before using this medication, inform your doctor if you have any allergies to Aralen Phosphate or hydroxychloroquine, or if you have had retinal damage or vision changes from an anti-malaria medication in the past. High doses or long-term use of chloroquine can lead to irreversible retinal damage, especially in people with existing eye conditions, kidney disease, or those who also take tamoxifen.

Also, tell your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Diabetes
  • Electrolyte imbalances (e.g., low potassium or magnesium levels)
  • Heart disease or heart rhythm disorders (like long QT syndrome)
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Psoriasis
  • Vision changes or retinal damage from anti-malaria drugs
  • Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Side effects that generally do not require medical attention, but should be reported to your doctor if persistent or bothersome:

  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Hair loss
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Trouble sleeping
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Allergic reactions
  • Changes in vision
  • Decreased hearing or ringing in the ears
  • Redness, loosening of the skin, blistering, peeling, or including inside the mouth
  • Seizures
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Side effects that should be reported to your doctor or healthcare provider immediately and this is not a complete list of side effects. Contact your doctor for medical advice regarding side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Do not take this medication with any of the following:
  • Cisapride
  • Dronedarone
  • Pimozide
  • Thioridazine
  • This medicine may also interact with:
  • Ampicillin
  • Antacids
  • Cimetidine
  • Cyclosporine
  • Diabetes medications, such as insulin, glipizide, or glyburide
  • Mefloquine
  • Praziquantel
  • Rabies vaccine
  • Tamoxifen
  • This is not a complete list of potential interactions. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider of all your medications.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Get emergency medical help or go to the nearest hospital immediately. An overdose of Aralen Phosphate can be life-threatening and requires prompt treatment.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Aralen should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by a doctor, as it could potentially harm the fetus. Pregnant women who travel to malaria-endemic areas are at a significantly higher risk of complications, including death, for both themselves and their baby. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits of malaria prevention with your healthcare provider. Additionally, Aralen passes into breast milk, and the effects on a nursing infant are not well understood, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
