Why is Bumex prescribed?

Bumex is used to treat edema (fluid retention) caused by conditions such as heart, kidney, and liver disease. It belongs to a class of medications known as diuretics, or "water pills."

What does it do?

Bumex works by prompting the kidneys to remove excess water and salt from the body through urine.

How should I take it?

Bumex is taken orally in tablet form, typically once a day. If used for treating edema, a second or third dose may be taken every 4 to 5 hours, depending on the level of swelling. Be sure to follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Take bumetanide exactly as prescribed, and do not take more or less than directed, or take it more often than recommended.

Discuss with your doctor if this medication should be used for children, as special precautions may be necessary.

Bumex helps control edema but does not cure it. Continue taking bumetanide, even if you feel fine. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor first.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Bumex?

Your healthcare provider needs to know if you have any of the following conditions:
  • Allergies or unusual reactions to Bumetanide, sulfa drugs and other medications.
  • Diarrhea
  • Kidney issues
  • Liver disease
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular heartbeat or rhythm
  • Low levels of electrolytes (such as potassium, magnesium, or sodium) in your blood
  • While taking this medication, you may need to follow a special diet. Consult your doctor and ask how many glasses of fluid you should drink each day and be cautious when brushing or flossing your teeth or using a toothpick, as you may be more prone to infection or bleeding. If you require dental work, inform your dentist that you are taking this Bumex.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

      Common side effects may include:
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Increased thirst
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting
    • Rare side effects may include:
  • Allergic reactions (itching or hives, skin rash; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue)
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Hearing loss or ringing in the ears
  • Unexplained bruising or bleeding
  • Kidney issues (difficulty urinating or changes in urine output)
  • Low blood pressure (lightheadedness, falls, dizziness, faintness, extreme weakness or fatigue)
  • Low potassium levels (rapid or irregular heartbeat, feeling faint, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, muscle cramps or pain)
  • Side effects that generally do not require medical attention (but should be reported to your doctor if they persist or become bothersome):

This list may not cover all potential side effects. Contact your doctor for advice on any side effects you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Alcohol
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs like Indomethacin
  • Diuretics
  • Lithium
  • Diabetic medications
  • High blood pressure medications
  • Certain antibiotics administered by injection
  • Heart medications such as digoxin and dofetilide
  • Hormones like cortisone, fludrocortisone, and hydrocortisone
  • Over-the-counter supplements like ginseng and ephedra
  • This list may not cover all possible interactions. Be sure to provide your healthcare provider with a complete list of all medications.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not allow it to freeze. Keep out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you believe you have taken an overdose of this medication as it may lead to dehydration, immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Bumex may also lower your blood potassium levels. During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when absolutely necessary. Speak with your doctor about the potential risks and benefits. It is unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
