Eliquis is a brand-name prescription product. It contains the active medication apixaban, a member of a class of drugs called factor Xa inhibitors.

What is Eliquis Used to Treat?
Eliquis is used to prevent strokes or clots in individuals with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat that can make you more likely to get clots and strokes).
In addition, a doctor may prescribe this medication to prevent or treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in those who have had hip or knee replacement surgery.
In DVT, clots form in the blood vessels of the thigh or leg. PE occurs when these clots block blood vessels in your lungs.
Lastly, Eliquis is also used to prevent DVT and PE from recurring after successful initial treatment.
It works by blocking a specific protein called clotting factor Xa. Your body needs this protein molecule to form clots inside the blood vessels.
Eliquis and its generic versions are available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg tablets to take by mouth.
How Should Eliquis Be Taken?
- Swallow the tablet whole with or without food; it is usually taken twice a day.
- If you have had hip or knee replacement surgery, take your first dose at least 12 to 24 hours after surgery to prevent DVT and PE.
- Continue taking your dose for 35 days if you have had hip replacement surgery and for 12 days if you have had knee replacement surgery.
- Alternatively, you may mix crushed tablets with water, apple juice or applesauce. However, make sure to consume the mixture immediately after you prepare it.
- If you are using a feeding tube, ask your doctor how to take this medication safely.
Your dosage, strength, and duration of treatment depend on your specific condition. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Never stop taking Eliquis without talking to your doctor.
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose shortly after you remember it. However, if it is just about time for the next dose, ignore the missed dose and continue taking your medicine following the usual dosing schedule.
Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
Your doctor may adjust your dose if you use other drugs, specifically ketoconazole, itraconazole, or ritonavir.

It is unclear if apixaban is safe and effective for use in children, while it is typically safe for use in older adults.
