Why is Capoten prescribed?

Capoten (Captopril) is an ACE inhibitor, where ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme. This medication is used to treat congestive heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), kidney issues caused by diabetes, and to enhance survival following a heart attack.

What does it do?

Capoten (Captopril) works by inhibiting a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict. This leads to the relaxation of the blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and improves the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart.

How should I take it?

Take Capoten (Captopril) by mouth as directed on your prescription label, ideally at the same time each day. It should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before eating. Continue taking it unless your healthcare provider instructs you to stop. Consult your doctor about using this medication in children, as special precautions may be necessary.

What if I missed a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Capoten?

You should not use Capoten if you are allergic to captopril or any other ACE inhibitors, such as Lisinopril, Moexipril, Benazepril, Fosinopril, Enalapril, Perindopril, Ramipril, Quinapril, or Trandolapril.

If you have kidney disease, you may need to avoid taking this medication with Aliskiren.

To ensure Capoten is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:

  • A connective tissue disorder, such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, scleroderma, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis
  • A history of organ transplant
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease (or are on dialysis)
  • Avoid dehydration during exercise or in hot weather. Follow your doctor's recommendations regarding fluid intake. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as dangerous as not drinking enough.

If you are being treated for heart failure, avoid strenuous exercise unless approved by your doctor.

If you're being treated for high blood pressure, continue taking this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and you may need to take blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.

Unless advised by your doctor or healthcare provider, refrain from using salt substitutes.

Do not self-medicate for coughs, colds, or pain while taking this medication without consulting your doctor or healthcare professional first, as some ingredients may raise your blood pressure.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

      Common side effects may include:
  • Cough
  • Changes in sex drive or performance
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Loss of taste
  • Tiredness
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Allergic reactions
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Chest pain
  • Dark urine
  • Fever or sore throat
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Feeling faint, lightheaded, or experiencing falls
  • Pain or difficulty urinating
  • Redness, peeling, blistering, or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
  • Unusual weakness
  • This list may not include all possible side effects. Contact your doctor for advice regarding any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Capoten with any of the following medications:

Do not take this medication with the following:

  • Valsartan
  • Sacubitril
  • This medicine may also interact with:

  • Antacids
  • Diuretics
  • Lithium
  • Potassium salts or supplements
  • Medications for high blood pressure
  • Medications for chest pain, such as nitroglycerin
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen or Naproxen
  • This list may not include all possible interactions. Provide your healthcare provider with a list of all the medications you are taking.

    How should I store it?

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect you have taken too much of this medication, immediately contact your provider or go to the emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Capoten is not recommended during pregnancy as it can harm the fetus. Discuss with your doctor the use of birth control while taking Capoten. Since Capoten passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby, breastfeeding while using this medication is not advised.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
