  • Description

Why is Desogen prescribed?

Desogen (Desogestrel/Etinilestradiol) is a combination of female hormones used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.

What does it do?

Desogen contains a combination of female hormones that work to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). Additionally, it alters the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.

How should I take it?

Take this medication by mouth as prescribed by your doctor, typically once a day. Start your first pill either on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday following the start of your period. You may need to use additional birth control methods, such as condoms or spermicide, when you begin taking Desogen. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss one active pill, take two pills on the day you remember, then continue taking one pill per day for the rest of the pack. Refer to the patient instructions that come with your Desogen. If you're unsure about these instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist for clarification. Missing a pill can increase the risk of pregnancy.

What are the special precautions before taking Desogen?

Taking Desogen can increase your risk of stroke, or heart attack, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Your risk is highest during the first year of taking birth control pills and when restarting them after being off for 4 weeks or more.

You should not take Desogen if you have:

  • A higher risk of blood clots due to a heart condition or a hereditary blood disorder
  • A history of hormone-related cancers, including breast, uterine, cervical, or vaginal cancer
  • A history of jaundice caused by birth control pills
  • Circulation issues, especially due to diabetes
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Liver disease or liver cancer
  • Smoking and being over 35 years old
  • Untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Heart disease (such as a history of heart attack)
  • Severe migraines (with aura, numbness, or vision changes), especially if over 35
To ensure Desogen is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
  • Diabetes or gallbladder disease
  • Depression
  • Migraines
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides, or if you are overweight
  • Heart disease or a tendency to develop blood clots
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Fibrocystic breast disease, nodules, lumps, or an abnormal mammogram
  • Varicose veins
The hormones in Desogen can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. This medication may also reduce breast milk production. Do not use Desogen if you are breastfeeding.

Does it have any side effects?

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction to Desogen, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face or throat.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Breakthrough bleeding
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Weight gain
    Serious side effects may include:
  • A breast lump
  • Swelling in your hands or feet
  • Signs of a stroke: sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), slurred speech, or severe headache
  • Signs of a blood clot: sharp chest pain, sudden vision loss, or coughing up blood
  • Increased blood pressure: severe headache, pounding in your neck or ears
  • Heart attack symptoms: chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder
  • Liver problems: upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Symptoms of depression, such as sleep problems, fatigue, and mood changes.
This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor for advice on managing side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Drug interactions can affect how your medications work or increase the risk of serious side effects. This document does not include all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use.
  • Aromatase inhibitors (such as Anastrozole)
  • Ospemifene
  • Fezolinetant
  • Tranexamic acid
Some medications can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control by lowering the levels of birth control hormones in your body, potentially leading to pregnancy.
  • Modafinil
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Griseofulvin
  • Rifamycins (such as Rifampin)
  • Seizure medications (such as Barbiturates)
  • St. John's wort
  • And certain HIV medications (such as Nelfinavir)
Notify your doctor if you start any new medication and discuss whether you should use additional reliable forms of birth control. Also, inform your doctor if you experience any new spotting or breakthrough bleeding, as these may indicate that your birth control is not working as effectively.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding. Get emergency medical assistance as needed.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Do not use Desogen if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant or miss two consecutive menstrual periods, stop using this medication and contact your doctor immediately. If you have recently given birth, wait at least 4 weeks before starting birth control pills.

This medication can pass into breast milk, potentially affecting milk production and harming a nursing infant. Speak with your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
