Why is Doryx prescribed?

Doryx is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including acne, intestinal infections, eye infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and gum disease (periodontitis). It is also effective for treating blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions linked to rosacea, though it does not address the facial redness associated with the condition. Additionally, certain forms of Doxycycline, like Doryx, are used to prevent malaria, treat anthrax, and combat infections caused by ticks, mites, or lice.

What does it do?

Doxycycline kills specific bacteria by inhibiting their protein production. It is also effective against the parasite responsible for malaria, although its exact way of working against the parasite is not fully understood. Additionally, Doxycycline may help protect gum tissue from breaking down.

How should I take it?

Take Doryx by mouth with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of fluids while using this medicine. Follow your prescription label and medication instructions carefully. Use as directed.

What if I missed a dose?

Take Doryx as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. If so, skip the missed dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Doryx?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Let your doctor know if you have a history of:

  • Asthma or a sulfite allergy
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Increased pressure in your skull
  • Use of medications like seizure drugs, Isotretinoin, or blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin/Coumadin)

If you're being treated for gonorrhea, your doctor may also test you for syphilis, as these infections can occur together.

Taking Doryx during pregnancy may affect the baby’s tooth and bone development. Use during the second half of pregnancy can lead to permanent tooth discoloration in the child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Doryx may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Talk to your doctor about using a non-hormonal contraceptive, such as condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide.

Doxycycline can pass into breast milk and may impact the bone and tooth development of a nursing baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.

Doryx may cause permanent yellow or gray tooth discoloration in children under 8 years old. It should only be used in young children for serious or life-threatening infections, like anthrax or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, where the benefits outweigh the risks.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, or loss of appetite
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Darkened skin
  • Vaginal itching or discharge

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a serious allergic or drug reaction affecting multiple parts of your body. Warning signs may include rash, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, severe fatigue, or unusual bruising. These symptoms can appear weeks after starting Doryx.

    Serious side effects may include:
  • Little or no urination
  • Throat irritation or trouble swallowing
  • Severe stomach pain or bloody/watery diarrhea
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Signs of low white blood cells (e.g., pale skin, easy bruising)
  • Symptoms of high pressure in the skull (e.g., vision problems, ringing in ears, dizziness)
  • Possible liver or pancreas issues (e.g., pper stomach pain, vomiting, or yellow skin or eyes)
This is not a full list of side effects. Contact your doctor for medical advice about any unusual symptoms.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Doryx with any of the following medications:

  • Antacids with aluminum, calcium, or magnesium
  • Blood thinners (used to prevent or treat blood clots)
  • Bismuth subsalicylate (e.g., Pepto-Bismol, for stomach upset or heartburn)
  • Barbiturates (e.g., Phenobarbital, for insomnia, migraines, or seizures)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, etc., for seizures or nerve pain)
  • Oral retinoids like isotretinoin or acitretin (for acne or psoriasis)
Be sure to always notify your doctor about any medications you are taking to help ensure safe and effective care.

How should I store it?

Store the medicine in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Do not freeze.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If too much Doxycycline is taken, get emergency help or contact emergency department immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Before using Doryx, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as tetracycline antibiotics may harm the fetus—though data on doxycycline are limited.

Doryx can pass into breast milk, but it’s unclear how much is absorbed by nursing infants. Breastfeeding while taking this medication is not recommended.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
