Why is Eldepryl prescribed?

Eldepryl (Selegiline Hydrochloride) is a monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor used to manage the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in patients who are already taking levodopa-carbidopa, another medication prescribed for Parkinson's disease treatment.

What does it do?

Eldepryl is an enzyme inhibitor (MAO inhibitor) that functions by slowing the breakdown of certain natural substances in the brain, including neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin.

How should I take it?

Take this medication orally as prescribed by your doctor, typically twice a day with breakfast and lunch.

What if I missed a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Eldepryl?

You should not use Eldepryl if you are allergic to selegiline or if you have taken Fluoxetine (Prozac and others) in the past 5 weeks.

Certain medications can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when combined with Eldepryl. If you are using any of the following drugs, your doctor may need to adjust your treatment plan:

  • Antidepressants such as Citalopram, Desvenlafaxine, Duloxetine
  • Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril)
  • Cough medicine containing dextromethorphan
  • MAO inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Linezolid, and others
  • Methadone
  • St. John's wort
  • Meperidine (Demerol) or other narcotic (opioid) pain medications
  • Tramadol

After discontinuing Eldepryl, you must wait at least 14 days before taking any of the medications listed above.

To ensure Eldepryl is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Parkinson's disease

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Dizziness
  • Skin rash or irritation
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Stomach pain, nausea, constipation
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Confusion or unusual thoughts or behavior
  • Dangerously high blood pressure
  • Trouble breathing
  • Light-headed feeling
  • Increased tremors or uncontrolled muscle movements
  • High serotonin levels (if taken with an antidepressant) causing agitation, fever, loss of coordination, or fainting
  • Worsening side effects from your other medications

You may experience unusual urges to gamble, increased sexual urges, or other intense desires while on this medication. If this happens, discuss it with your doctor.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor for medical advice regarding side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Drug interactions can affect how your medications work or increase the risk of serious side effects. This document doesn't cover all potential drug interactions.
  • Antidepressants (such as Bupropion)
  • Appetite suppressants (such as Diethylpropion)
  • Atomoxetine
  • Apraclonidine
  • Buspirone
  • Carbamazepine/ Oxcarbazepine
  • Cyclobenzaprine
  • Deutetrabenazine
  • Fentanyl
  • Metoclopramide
  • Phenylephrine
  • Other MAO Inhibitors (such as Isocarboxazid)

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these drugs before, during, or within 2 weeks after using Selegiline. If you've used Fluoxetine, wait at least 5 weeks before starting Selegiline. Talk to your doctor about how long to wait between starting or stopping any of these medications and taking Selegiline.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep away from light and moisture.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has overdosed and is experiencing serious symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

There are no sufficient and well-controlled studies of Eldepryl in pregnant women or children. Selegiline should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks to the fetus. It is not known whether selegiline hydrochloride is excreted in human breast milk.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
