Why is Epivir prescribed?

Epivir (Lamivudine) is an antiretroviral medication used in combination with other drugs to treat HIV. While it helps reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others, it is not a cure for the virus.

What does it do?

This medication helps reduce the risk of HIV-related complications (such as new infections or cancer) and enhances your quality of life. Lamivudine is not a cure for HIV, but it can help lower the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

How should I take it?

Take Epivir orally, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor, typically once or twice a day and make sure to take this medication same time every day.

The dosage depends on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, just take that dose. Do not take two doses at once.

What are the special precautions before taking Epivir?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history and you should not take Epivir if you are allergic to Lamivudine.

Inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Diabetes (liquid lamivudine contains 3 to 4 grams of sucrose per dose)
  • Liver disease (especially hepatitis B or C, or a liver transplant)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney disease
  • There is a risk of lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood. This risk may be higher if you have other medical conditions, have been on HIV medication for an extended period, or are a woman. Consult your doctor about your risk.

You should not take Epivir-HBV (for treating hepatitis B) if you are also using other medications that contain lamivudine or emtricitabine, including Atripla, Combivir, Complera, Emtriva, Epzicom, Stribild, Trizivir, or Truvada.

Does it have any side effects?

Epivir can cause side effects. Inform your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • Diarrhea
  • Depression
  • Headache
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Stuffy nose
  • If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Rash
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the fingers or toes
  • Excessive fatigue, weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Signs of Jaundice yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Epivir may cause other side effects. Contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms while taking this medication.
  • Vomiting & Nausea (in children)
  • Is it safe to take it with another drug?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions.

  • Emtricitabine
  • Interferon
  • Ribavirin
  • Other lamivudine-based medicines
  • This is not a complete list of possible interactions as some of these may interact with your medication.

    How should I store it?

Keep this medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Overdose of Epivir may cause lactic acidosis and monitoring is important in any case contact your doctor or go to the emergency room immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant and ensure that you are using your medications correctly to manage your infection. If HIV is not controlled during pregnancy, it can be transmitted to your baby. Your name may be included in a registry to monitor the effects of antiviral medication on your baby.

While using Lamivudine to treat hepatitis B, you should not breastfeed. Women with HIV or AIDS should avoid breastfeeding, as the virus can be passed to the baby through breast milk, even if the baby is born HIV-negative.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
