Why is Gilotrif prescribed?

Gilotrif (Afatinib) is a cancer medication used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that is EGFR-positive, meaning the cancer is driven by abnormal changes in the EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) gene.

What does it do?

Gilotrif belongs to a class of medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors. It works by targeting specific proteins found on cancer cells. By blocking these proteins, Gilotrif helps stop the growth and spread of cancer cells and can lead to their death.

How should I take it?

Take Gilotrif on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal. Do not adjust your dose or stop taking Gilotrif unless instructed by your doctor.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Gilotrif, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is due in less than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses at once.

What are the special precautions before taking Gilotrif?

Before taking Afatinib, inform your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have, including if you:
  • Have kidney or liver issues
  • Have heart problems
  • Have lung or breathing problems unrelated to lung cancer
  • Have a history of ulcers, intestinal perforation, or diverticular disease (inflammation in parts of your large intestine)
  • Have had severe dry eyes or other eye issues, and let your provider know if you wear contact lenses

While on Afatinib, limit your sun exposure, as the medication can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. This could lead to worsening rashes or acne, or even severe sunburn. If you must be outside, use sunscreen and wear protective clothing, such as a hat, to shield your skin from the sun.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Mouth sores
  • Nail inflammation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting

Gilotrif may cause serious side effects. It's important to monitor your symptoms closely and contact your doctor immediately if you notice anything unusual. Here are some of the key risks:

    Serious side effects may include:
  • Severe Diarrhea
  • Skin Reactions- Gilotrif may cause redness, rashes, or acne. Early treatment is important. If you develop severe reactions like blistering or mouth sores, get medical help immediately.
  • Lung or Breathing Problems-This medication may cause lung inflammation, which in rare cases can be fatal. Symptoms may mimic lung cancer.
  • Liver Problems- Gilotrif can affect liver function, sometimes severely.
  • Eye Issues-Inform your doctor if you experience eye pain or any vision changes.
  • Heart Problems

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Gilotrif with any of the following medications:
  • Antifungal medications such as Itraconazole or Ketoconazole
  • HIV treatments like nelfinavir (Viracept)
  • Immunosuppressants such as Cyclosporine (Gengraf)
  • Antibiotics like erythromycin (Ery-Tab and others)
  • Heart or blood pressure medications such as quinidine or Amiodarone (Pacerone)
  • Tuberculosis treatment like Rifampin (Rifadin)
  • Seizure medications such as Phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek)
  • Herbal supplements, particularly St. John’s wort (commonly used for depression)
  • Corticosteroids like Dexamethasone, or Prednisone (used to treat inflammation)
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

Some of these medications may affect how Gilotrif works by altering its levels in the blood. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about everything you're currently taking or have recently taken.

This may not be a complete list of potential drug interactions. Always consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

How should I store it?

Store Gilotrif at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you take more than the prescribed amount of Gilotrif, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency room as you may experience nausea, dizziness, and abdominal pain.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as afatinib may harm an unborn baby. Women who can become pregnant should use reliable birth control while taking afatinib and for at least 2 weeks after the final dose. Your healthcare provider can help you choose an appropriate birth control method.

If you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed, inform your doctor. It is not known whether afatinib passes into breast milk. To avoid potential risks, do not breastfeed while on afatinib and for 2 weeks after your last dose. Talk to your doctor about the safest way to feed your baby during this time.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
