Why is Intelence prescribed?

Intelence is an antiviral medication that helps prevent the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in the body. It is used alongside other medications to treat HIV in adults and children aged 6 and older. While Intelence helps manage HIV, it is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

What does it do?

Intelence (Etravirine) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It works by blocking an enzyme in HIV called reverse transcriptase, which the virus uses to replicate itself. By inhibiting this enzyme, Intelence (Etravirine) prevents the virus from making copies and spreading.

How should I take it?

Swallow Intelence tablets whole. Do not chew the tablet(s). Take Intelence tablets daily as prescribed by your healthcare provider, always with a meal. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach, as it may reduce its effectiveness.

What if I missed a dose?

If you are less than 6 hours late taking your dose, take it after your next meal and then resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Intelence?

To ensure the safe use of Intelence, inform your doctor if you have any liver conditions, including hepatitis B or C.

Intelence should be taken with other HIV medications, but there are specific combinations that should not be used with etravirine. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions carefully.

You should not take Intelence with:

  • Efavirenz
  • Nevirapine
  • Delavirdine
  • Rilpivirine
  • St. John's Wort
  • Rifabutin or Rifampin
  • Ritonavir with Fosamprenavir or Tipranavir
  • Ritonavir doses greater than 600 mg twice daily
  • Seizure medications (e.g., Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital)

If you're also taking a Protease inhibitor such as Atazanavir, Fosamprenavir, or Nelfinavir, you must take Intelence with Ritonavir.

Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed, as the virus can be transmitted through breast milk, even if the baby is born without HIV.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:

In adults, the most common side effects are tingling, rash, or pain in the hands or feet. In children, rash and diarrhea are more common.

    Serious side effects may include:
  • Severe skin rash and allergic reactions: A rash is a common side effect, especially in females. In rare cases, it can be severe and even life-threatening. Children under 18 may experience more severe rashes, particularly when Intelence is combined with other HIV-1 medications. If a rash occurs with any of the following symptoms, stop taking Intelence and contact your healthcare provider immediately:
  • Liver problems: Signs of liver issues
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine
  • Nausea or pain in the right side of your stomach
  • Immune system changes: As your immune system strengthens, it may start fighting off infections that were previously hidden.
  • Changes in body fat: This condition can occur with HIV-1 medications, but the cause and long-term effects are unknown.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you experience these or other symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Certain medications can affect the blood levels of Intelence, potentially causing side effects or reducing its effectiveness. Intelence can also alter the blood levels of other drugs, making them less effective or increasing side effects.

Many drugs interact with Etravirine, including but not limited to:

  • Antifungal medicines (e.g., Itraconazole, Ketoconazole)
  • HIV treatments (e.g., Boceprevir, Telaprevir)
  • Blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin, Coumadin)
  • Cholesterol medications (e.g., Atorvastatin, Simvastatin)
  • Heart medications (e.g., Amiodarone, Digoxin)
  • Erectile dysfunction drugs (e.g., Sildenafil, Tadalafil)
  • Immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, Tacrolimus)
  • Narcotics (e.g., Buprenorphine, Methadone)

This is not a complete list, and other drugs, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products, may also interact with etravirine. Always inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking or plan to start during treatment with Intelence.

How should I store it?

Store the medication in its original bottle at room temperature, away from light and moisture.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you take an overdose of Intelence, contact your healthcare provider or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. Proper treatment can reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby. Be sure to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

This medication can pass into breast milk. Since breast milk can transmit HIV, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
