Why is Iopidine Eye Drops prescribed?

Iodipine (Apraclonidine) is commonly used to reduce intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye). It is also used to prevent or manage increased eye pressure following certain eye surgeries, such as those for glaucoma or cataracts.

What does it do?

Elevated pressure inside the eye can cause nerve damage and lead to vision loss. Apraclonidine helps lower this pressure by decreasing the amount of fluid produced in the eye.

How should I take it?

Use this medication only in the eyes as directed, applying the prescribed number of drops into the lower eyelid pouch with clean hands, avoiding contact with the dropper tip, then gently close your eyes and press the inner corner for 1–2 minutes.

What if I missed a dose?

If a dose is missed, take Iopidine Eye Drops as soon as possible. However, if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Iopidine Eye Drops?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

  • Depression
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • If you wear contact lenses
  • Heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Circulation issues (like Raynaud’s syndrome)
  • Eye problems (abrasion, infection, or inflammation)
  • Allergies to apraclonidine, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives

This medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or doing tasks that require alertness until you know how it affects you. To reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting, avoid standing or sitting up too quickly—especially if you're older. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness, so it's best to avoid drinking while using this medication.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops. You can put them back in 15 minutes after using the medication.

If your eyes become more sensitive to light, consider wearing dark sunglasses for comfort.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects that usually don't need medical attention (but let your care team know if they persist):

    Common side effects may include:
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred or changed vision
  • Eye irritation or itching
  • Increased tearing after use
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, or swelling of the tongue, face, or throat
  • New or worsening redness, irritation, eye pain, or unusual discharge

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor if any other side effects occur.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Do not use this medication with MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) like Nardil, Marplan, or Parnate.

  • Alcohol
  • Certain antihistamines
  • Some antidepressants like Amitriptyline
  • Medications for blood pressure or heart disease
  • Seizure medications such as Phenobarbital or Primidone, sleep aids
  • And opioid pain or cough medications.
This is not a complete list of possible interactions, so be sure to inform your doctor about all medicines, herbs, supplements, and over-the-counter products you are taking.

How should I store it?

Keep this medication in its original container at room temperature, and protect it from exposure to light.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone accidentally swallows Apraclonidine eye drops, contact emergency services immediately as it may cause apnea, bradycardia, lethargy and arrhythmia.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

It’s unclear whether Apraclonidine can affect pregnancy or pass into breast milk. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, inform your doctor. They will determine whether it is safe for you to use Apraclonidine during this time.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
