Why is Kaletra prescribed?

Kaletra (Lopinavir/Ritonavir) is used to treat HIV, the virus that leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

What does it do?

Kaletra is a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, two antiviral medications that work together to stop the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from replicating in your body.

How should I take it?

Take Kaletra daily exactly as prescribed by your doctor based on your regimen either one or twice daily Swallow the tablets whole do not break, chew, or crush them. Kaletra can be taken with or without food.

What if I missed a dose?

Do not skip a dose of Kaletra, as this could make the virus more difficult to treat. If you miss a dose of Kaletra, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Kaletra?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

To ensure Kaletra is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:

  • A history of liver disease (especially hepatitis B or C)
  • Heart rhythm disorders, heart disease, or a family history of long QT syndrome
  • Pancreatic issues, low potassium levels, diabetes, or a bleeding disorder (like hemophilia)
It is unclear whether Kaletra harms an unborn baby, but untreated HIV during pregnancy can pass the virus to your baby. Take all HIV medications as prescribed to manage the infection.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Rapid or pounding heartbeats, shortness of breath, or fluttering in your chest
  • Symptoms of a kidney stone, such as blood in your urine or painful urination
  • High blood sugar signs, like increased thirst or frequent urination
  • Symptoms of liver or pancreas problems, including loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, upper stomach pain (possibly radiating to your back), or yellowing of the skin or eyes

Kaletra may affect your immune system and cause side effects weeks or months after taking it. Notify your doctor if you experience:

  • Signs of a new infection, such as night sweats, swollen glands, fever, diarrhea, or weight loss
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing, or unusual sensations like weakness or prickling
  • Menstrual changes, swelling in your neck or throat, or impotence

Kaletra may also cause changes in body fat distribution, particularly in areas like the face, arms, breasts, legs, neck, and waist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • And increased cholesterol or triglyceride levels

This is not a complete list of side effects. For further advice, consult your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Kaletra can interact with many medications, and this list does not cover all possible interactions. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you're currently taking, including any you start or stop, especially:

  • Narcotics
  • Seizure medications
  • Steroids
  • Cancer treatments
  • Antibiotics or antifungal medications
  • Antiviral treatments for hepatitis C or HIV
  • Erectile dysfunction medications
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension treatments
  • Severe depression or schizophrenia medications
  • Heart or blood pressure medications
  • Blood clot prevention medications
  • Organ transplant rejection medications
  • Statin cholesterol-lowering drugs
This is not a complete list, and other prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products can also interact with Kaletra. Provide a full list of your medications to any healthcare provider who treats you.

How should I store it?

Store Kaletra tablets at room temperature, between 59°F and 86°F (15°C to 30°C). Do not remove the tablets from their original container for more than 2 weeks, especially in humid areas. Keep the container tightly closed.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you take more Kaletra than prescribed, you can use activated charcoal and immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant before using Kaletra. It can help reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby. Be sure to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
