Why is Kytril prescribed?

Kytril (Granisetron Hydrochloride) is an antinausea and antiemetic medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with radiation therapy, cancer chemotherapy, and anesthesia during surgery.

What does it do?

Kytril works by blocking a specific receptor called 5-HT3 in the gut and brain, which is responsible for triggering nausea when the body encounters certain substances or stimuli, such as radiation. By inhibiting this receptor, granisetron helps reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

How should I take it?

Kytril is typically taken only on the day you receive chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Your doctor may instruct you to take a single dose up to one hour before your treatment begins.

In some cases, especially for patients receiving chemotherapy, a second dose of Granisetron may be given 12 hours after the first. Be sure to follow your doctor’s dosing instructions exactly.

What if I missed a dose?

If you forget to take your dose within 1 hour before chemotherapy or radiation, inform your doctor. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before taking Kytril?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

To ensure Kytril is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • A heart rhythm disorder
  • Heart disease
  • Recently undergone stomach or intestinal surgery
  • A personal or family history of long QT syndrome
  • An electrolyte imbalance, such as low potassium or magnesium levels
Kytril is not approved for use in individuals under 18 years of age.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Headache accompanied by chest pain or rapid and pounding heartbeat
  • Signs of high blood pressure, such as a severe headache or shortness of breath
  • Symptoms of serotonin syndrome, including agitation, overactive reflexes, loss of coordination, or fainting
    Common side effects may include:
  • Constipation
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Fever or flu-like symptoms
  • Stomach discomfort or loss of appetite
This is not a complete list of side effects. Others may occur. Contact your doctor for medical advice regarding side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Kytril (Granisetron Hydrochloride) may cause a serious heart condition, especially when taken with certain other medications, such as drugs for heart rhythm issues, anti psychotics, antibiotics, antidepressants, and medications used to treat cancer, malaria, or HIV/AIDS.

Using Granisetron with specific drugs can also lead to dangerously high levels of serotonin in the body, a potentially life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • Lithium
  • Ritonavir
  • St. John's wort
  • Antidepressants
  • Migraine medications
  • Narcotic (opioid) pain relievers or muscle relaxants
  • Other anti-nausea drugs

This is not a complete list. Other prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements may also interact with Granisetron. Always tell your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking and any you start or stop while using Kytril.

How should I store it?

Keep Kytril at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat, and light.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Granisetron, seek medical attention immediately or go to nearest hospital right away.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Granisetron should be used during pregnancy only if prescribed by your doctor. It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
