Why is Lariam prescribed?

Lariam (Mefloquine Hydrochloride) is an antimalarial medication used to prevent and treat mild to moderate malaria.

What does it do?

Lariam works by disrupting the growth of parasites within the red blood cells of the body.

How should I take it?

Take Lariam orally as prescribed by your doctor for mild to moderate malaria in adults and as prophylaxis it is taken once a day ans should be taken a week.

To avoid stomach upset, take it with food or milk and never on an empty stomach. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, it can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water or another beverage.

What if I missed a dose?

Because Lariam is often given as a single dose, you may not have a regular dosing schedule. If you are taking it weekly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then continue with your next dose on the usual day. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.

If you forget to take the medication within one week before your trip, contact your doctor for guidance.

What are the special precautions before taking Lariam?

Some people taking Lariam have experienced sudden, serious psychiatric or neurological problems. In some cases, these effects have lasted for months or even years after stopping the medication and may be permanent. If you have concerns about taking this medicine, talk to your doctor.

You should also avoid using Lariam to prevent malaria if you have a recent history of:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or psychosis
  • Seizures

However, your doctor may still prescribe Lariam to treat malaria even if you have any of these conditions.

To ensure Lariam is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • A history of mental illness
  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders
  • Bleeding or blood clotting disorders
  • If you are taking blood thinners such as Warfarin

Do not use Lariam if you are allergic to it or to similar drugs such as Quinine or Quinidine.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Stop taking Lariam and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Confusion or unusual behavior
  • Severe anxiety or depression
  • Sudden headache, ringing in the ears, or difficulty with coordination
  • Paranoia or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t real)
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Light-headedness or feeling like you might faint
  • High blood pressure symptoms such as blurred vision, severe headache, or chest pain.
  • Signs of liver problems, including upper stomach pain, pale stools, nausea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
    Common side effects may include:
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever or chills
  • Mild skin rash
This is not a complete list of side effects. Other side effects may occur. Contact your doctor for medical advice about any side effects you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Many medications can interact with Lariam, and not all possible interactions are listed here. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, as well as any new medicines you start or stop during your treatment with Lariam, especially:

  • Seizure medications
  • Tuberculosis treatments
  • Heart or blood pressure medications
  • Medicines for depression or other mental health conditions
  • Live vaccines, such as mumps, measles, and rubella (MMR)
This is not a complete list, and many other drugs—including prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements—can interact with Lariam. Always provide a complete list of your medications to any healthcare provider involved in your care.

How should I store it?

Store Lariam at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Avoid storing in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has taken too much Lariam and experiences serious symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital for emergency care.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Lariam should be used during pregnancy only if prescribed by your doctor. This medication can pass into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
