Why is Lonsurf prescribed?

Lonsurf (Trifluridine/Tipiracil) is commonly prescribed for colorectal cancer and is also used to treat cancers of the stomach or esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.

What does it do?

This medication contains two active ingredients: Trifluridine and Tipiracil. Trifluridine resembles a component of DNA, and when it enters a cancer cell, it incorporates into the DNA, preventing the cell from multiplying. This slows down the cancer’s growth. Tipiracil helps by stopping trifluridine from breaking down too quickly, allowing it to remain active in the body longer and enhancing its effectiveness.

How should I take it?

Take Lonsurf exactly as your doctor has prescribed and swallow the tablet as whole. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and carefully read any medication guides or instruction sheets provided. Your doctor may adjust your dose from time to time.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, contact your doctor for guidance. Do not take two doses at once. If you vomit soon after taking Lonsurf, do not take an extra dose. Instead, wait and take your next dose at the scheduled time.

What are the special precautions before taking Lonsurf?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

To ensure Lonsurf is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease

If you have severe kidney disease, your dosage may need to be lowered. Lonsurf should not be used by patients with moderate or severe liver disease.

Tipiracil and trifluridine can harm an unborn baby if either the mother or father is taking this medication. If you are a woman, do not use Lonsurf if you are pregnant. Use effective contraception to prevent pregnancy during treatment and for at least 6 months after your last dose.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Serious side effects may include:
  • Low platelet levels in your blood, which can cause unusual bleeding, easy bruising, or purple/red spots under your skin.
  • Low red blood cell counts (anemia), which may cause pale skin, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath.
  • Low white blood cell counts, which can lead to fever, mouth or skin sores, or difficulty breathing.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Fever
  • Infections
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Nausea or diarrhea
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Low blood cell counts
  • Stomach pain or loss of appetite

Your cancer treatment might be delayed or stopped permanently if you develop certain side effects. Older adults may be more likely to experience serious side effects.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you experience any symptoms or have concerns, call your doctor for medical advice.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Tipiracil and Trifluridine can interact with other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, as well as any new medicines you begin or stop using.

How should I store it?

Lonsurf should be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication in a cool, dry place. If you transfer Lonsurf tablets out of their original container, discard them after 30 days.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Get emergency medical help immediately and seek immediate medical attention to prevent further complications.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: Lonsurf may harm an unborn baby. You will need to have a pregnancy test to confirm you are not pregnant before starting this medication. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Lonsurf, contact your doctor immediately.

Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether Lonsurf passes into breast milk. Do not breastfeed while taking this medication and for at least one day after your last dose. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
