Why is Mirapex prescribed?

Pramipexole (Mirapex) is prescribed alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It is also prescribed for a condition called restless legs syndrome (RLS). These two conditions are separate from each other and having one does not cause you to have the other condition.

What does it do?

Parkinson’s disease is caused by low or inadequate levels of dopamine (a chemical messenger) in the brain. When dopamine levels are low, symptoms such as muscle stiffness, tremors, slow movement, and problems with balance may occur.

Restless legs syndrome is a condition that causes an unpleasant sensation in your legs which urges you to move your legs to ease the discomfort. This usually occurs at night and when sitting or lying down.

Pramipexole is classified as a non-ergot dopamine agonist and it acts similarly to dopamine, allowing your body to regain its normal movements.

How should I take it?

Mirapex is available in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, and 1.5mg tablets intended for oral administration.

It should be taken with a full glass of water with or without food. However, it is recommended to take Mirapex with food to prevent nausea. Swallow the tablet as a whole and do not crush, chew, break it in half, or tamper the tablet in any way. Take it at the same time every day.

Your treatment program with Mirapex will depend on your disease. The dose and frequency of taking Mirapex for Parkinson’s disease will be different from the dose and frequency of taking Mirapex for restless legs syndrome. Take Mirapex exactly as your doctor instructed and do not make alterations in the dosage or frequency. Your doctor will make adjustments to your dosage as necessary.

Mirapex does not treat Parkinson’s disease and it only controls it. Continue to take the medication even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Mirapex suddenly as this may cause withdrawal symptoms such as fever, stiff muscles, unusual body movements, and confusion.

Mirapex also does not treat restless legs syndrome and it only controls it. Continue taking the medication and do not stop taking it suddenly to prevent the worsening of your symptoms. Consult your doctor if your symptoms become worse.

Always consult your doctor before stopping the medication and clarify any concerns you may have when taking Mirapex.

What if I missed a dose?

Taking the dose properly at the scheduled time is needed to attain the desired effect of the drug. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and catch the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses just to make up for your missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Mirapex?

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Pramipexole, any component of Mirapex, or any other medications.

Tell your doctor if you have or ever had any mental illness, problems in controlling your muscle movements, a sleep disorder, kidney disease, drowsiness during the day, dizziness, or low blood pressure.

Taking Pramipexole may cause drowsiness and make you fall asleep suddenly. Do not perform activities that require your full attention such as driving, operating machinery, or working at heights. If you feel very drowsy and suddenly fall asleep while doing your regular daily activities, discuss these effects with your doctor.

Avoid alcohol intake when taking Pramipexole to prevent the occurrence of side effects.

Avoid getting up too quickly from a sitting or lying position when taking Pramipexole as it may cause lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting when doing so. To avoid this, get up slowly, and place your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing up.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

In the event of an overdose, inform your doctor and seek immediate medical attention. A symptom of overdose may include a fast heart rate.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

There are limited studies and data regarding the safety of Pramipexole in pregnant women. According to the US FDA, Pramipexole is categorized as Pregnancy Category C. It is unknown if it will cause harm to the fetus.

It is unknown if Pramipexole is excreted in human milk and it is also unknown if it may cause harmful effects to the breastfeeding infant.

The use of Pramipexole in pregnant and breastfeeding women should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey, and Singapore.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
