Why is Nocdurna prescribed?

Nocdurna (Desmopressin) is prescribed to treat nocturnal polyuria, a condition where the body produces excessive urine at night, causing frequent nighttime urination. It helps reduce the amount of urine produced, allowing for better sleep quality.

What does it do?

Nocdurna (Desmopressin) works by mimicking the action of a natural hormone called antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or vasopressin. Vasopressin regulates the amount of urine your body produces. It binds to V2 receptors in the kidneys, specifically in the cells of the distal tubules and collecting ducts.

This triggers a cascade of cellular events that increase the insertion of aquaporins (water channels) into the cell membranes. These aquaporins enhance the kidney's ability to reabsorb water, reducing the amount of urine produced.

How should I take it?

The recommended dose may vary depending on gender:

  • For women, the recommended dose is is 27.7 mcg once daily, one hour before bedtime, administered sublingually without water.
  • For men, the recommended dose is 55.3 mcg once daily, one hour before bedtime, administered sublingually without water.

Limit fluid intake starting one hour before and continuing for 8 hours after taking the medication to reduce the risk of water retention and hyponatremia (low sodium levels). Lastly, make sure to empty your bladder before taking the medication.

What if I missed a dose?

Since Nocdurna is taken once daily before bedtime, simply skip the missed dose if you've already passed your usual time, then take your next dose at the usual time on the following night. Never take two doses at the same time to make up for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before taking Nocdurna?

Before taking Nocdurna, inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, particularly if you:
  • Are at risk for low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Are experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or an infection.
  • Have heart or kidney issues.
  • Have high blood pressure.
  • Have elevated pressure in your brain (intracranial pressure).
  • Have had difficulty fully emptying your bladder (urinary retention).

Avoid taking Nocdurna if you:

  • Have or have had low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Experience excessive thirst and consume large amounts of fluids (polydipsia).
  • Are using loop-diuretics (a type of water pill).
  • Are on glucocorticoid (steroid) medication, including inhaled glucocorticoids.
  • Have moderate to severe kidney disease.
  • Have or might have syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) secretion.
  • Suffer from conditions that lower fluid or electrolyte levels, such as vomiting, diarrhea, infections, or kidney problems that reduce sodium levels.
  • Have heart failure.
  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Are allergic to any components of NOCDURNA, including desmopressin acetate, gelatin (from fish), mannitol, or anhydrous citric acid.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness or lightheaded
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Hyponatremia (low sodium levels)
  • Seizures
  • Fainting
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe water retention, leading to swelling in the hands, feet, or face

This is not a complete list of all possible side effects, and others may occur. For more information about side effects, please consult your healthcare provider.

  • Beclomethasone
  • Budesonide
  • Clobetasol
  • Flucloronide
  • Flumethasone
  • Furosemide
  • Prednisolone

Here are some important reminders to keep in mind:

  • Avoid combining Nocdurna with medications that increase the risk of hyponatremia (low sodium levels), such as diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antidepressants.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Nocdurna, as it can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and low sodium levels.
  • Be cautious with medications that affect fluid balance or kidney function, as they may amplify the effects of Nocdurna.
  • How should I store it?

Store Nocdurna in its original packaging at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture. Typically, a temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) is ideal.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

In case of an overdose with Nocdurna, it's important to seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, severe headache, sudden unexplained weight gain, or trouble urinating. Contact your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital right away if any symptoms persist.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss with your healthcare provider whether Nocdurna is suitable for you, as its effects on an unborn baby are unknown. It is not intended to manage common pregnancy-related frequent urination at night.

For breastfeeding mothers, be aware that desmopressin, an ingredient in Nocdurna, passes into breast milk. Your healthcare provider can help determine the best feeding option for your baby while taking Nocdurna.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
