Why is Precose prescribed?

Precose (Acarbose) is frequently used to help reduce blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

What does it do?

Precose works in the small intestine by inhibiting the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), the form of sugar that your body can absorb. It slows the absorption of sugar from the small intestine.

How should I take it?

Take this medication orally with a glass of water, following the instructions on the prescription label and not exceeding three tablets per day as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets at the beginning of a main meal. Take your doses at consistent intervals, and do not take more medication than prescribed. Only stop taking this medication if advised by your doctor.

What if I missed a dose?

If you forget to take your dose at the beginning of your meal and are still eating, take it while you're still eating. If you've already finished your meal, skip the missed dose. This medication only works when taken during a meal. Wait until your next main meal to take your next dose, and take only that dose. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Precose?

Your healthcare provider needs to know if you have any of the following conditions:

  • An allergy or unusual reaction to acarbose, other medications
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach or bowel disorders, including bowel obstruction
  • Always keep a quick source of sugar on hand in case you experience symptoms of low blood sugar, such as glucose tablets. Let others know that you could choke if you consume food or drink during severe low blood sugar symptoms (like seizures or unconsciousness), and they must seek immediate medical help.

Notify your healthcare provider if you experience high blood sugar, as you may need a dosage adjustment. If you're sick or engaging in more physical activity than usual, your dosage may need to be changed as well.

Do not skip meals, and consult your healthcare provider about alcohol consumption, as many over-the-counter cough and cold medicines contain sugar or alcohol, which can affect blood sugar.

It's important to follow a diabetic diet while taking this medication, as it may help reduce side effects such as diarrhea, bloating, and gas. If you continue to experience severe diarrhea or gas despite following the diet, contact your healthcare provider.

Does it have any side effects?

Side effects that should be reported to your care team immediately:

    • Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
    • Liver injury, indicated by right upper belly pain, dark yellow or brown urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, loss of appetite, nausea, pale stools, or unusual weakness or fatigue
    • Side effects that typically do not require medical attention (but should be reported if they persist or become bothersome):

      • Bloating
      • Diarrhea
      • Gas
      • Stomach pain
      • This list may not cover all potential side effects. Contact your doctor for advice if you experience any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions.

This medication may interact with the following:

      • Charcoal
      • Digestive enzymes, such as amylase and pancreatin
      • Digoxin
      • Diuretics
      • Female hormones, including estrogens, progestins, and birth control pills
      • Isoniazid
      • Medications for colds or respiratory issues, such as pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine
      • Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers (medications for high blood pressure)
      • Nicotinic acid
      • Phenothiazines, like chlorpromazine, mesoridazine, prochlorperazine, and thioridazine
      • Phenytoin
      • Steroid medications, including prednisone or cortisone
      • Thyroid hormones
      • This list may not cover all potential interactions. Be sure to provide your healthcare provider with a complete list of all medications, herbs, over-the-counter drugs, or dietary supplements you use.

Also, inform them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use recreational drugs, as these may also interact with your medication.

Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

        How should I store it?

Store at room temperature, below 25°C (77°F), and protect from moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Precose, seek medical help immediately or go to nearest hospital. Avoid consuming foods or drinks that contain carbohydrates for about four to six hours if you have taken an overdose of Acarbose.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Precose should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend switching to insulin during pregnancy. It is unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breast feeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
