Why is Prolensa eye drops prescribed?
Bromfenac (Prolensa) eye drops is prescribed for patients who have eye inflammation and eye pain associated with cataract surgery (a procedure to replace the natural lens of your eye and replace it with an artificial one, in most cases).
What does it do?
Bromfenac belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It acts by stopping the release of prostaglandins (natural substances in the body that cause inflammation and pain) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (the enzyme responsible for the formation of prostaglandins) 1 and 2, thus, reducing pain and inflammation.
How should I use it?
Prolensa eye drops is a 0.07% ophthalmic solution available in 3ml bottles.
In using the product, always follow the recommended number of drops your doctor has prescribed. Follow all directions on the label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist for any clarifications. In some instances, your doctor may also instruct you to use Prolensa eye drops a day before and on the day of your surgery.
To apply Prolensa eye drops:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Check the dropper tip for chipping or cracks.
- Tilt your head back slightly and form a pocket by pulling down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger.
- Place the dropper above your eye, as close as possible, with the tip facing down.
- Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze gently until a drop falls into the pocket made by your lower eyelid and remove your index finger.
- Close your eye for 2 to 3 minutes and lean your head towards the floor and do not blink or squeeze your eyelids. If you are prescribed to use more than one drop, wait for 5 minutes before administering the next drop.
- Place your finger on the tear duct and apply light pressure.
- Put back the cap firmly on the dropper bottle to prevent any spills. It is not necessary to wipe or rinse the dropper tip.
- Wash your hands to ensure they are clean and free from any medication.
Avoid touching the tip of the eye dropper with your hands or placing it directly on your eye. This may lead to an infection, and cause eyesight problems.
Each bottle of Prolensa eye drops should be used for one eye only. If both eyes will need treatment, use a separate bottle for the other eye.
It is imperative to use Prolensa eye drops according to your doctor’s prescription. Use it only for the recommended duration and amount stated. Do not use more or less than the recommended dosage prescribed by your doctor.
What if I missed a dose?
If you miss a dose, administer the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take it on your next scheduled time. Never take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose, unless told otherwise.
Consult your doctor if you were unable to administer your first dose, which is usually given a day before the surgery.
The desired effects of prescribed medications will only be achieved if used properly. As much as possible, strictly follow your doctor’s prescribed dosing schedule.
What are the special precautions before using Prolensa eye drops?
Before using the eye drops, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to Bromfenac, Aspirin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or any component in Prolensa eye drops. It contains sodium sulfite, which may cause anaphylactic reactions for sensitive patients.
Also, inform your doctor or pharmacist of other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins and supplements you are taking or planning to take.
If you have diabetes, asthma, swelling of your joints, eye problems other than cataracts, blood disorders such as bleeding tendencies, inform your doctor.
Wearing of contact lenses is prohibited while using Prolensa eye drops. Always remove your contact lenses before administering the medication. It contains benzalkonium chloride which may be absorbed by your contact lenses. You may reinsert your lenses 10 minutes after administering Prolensa.
