Why is Qtern prescribed?

Qtern is prescribed to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It contains a combination of dapagliflozin and saxagliptin, which work together to control blood sugar levels. Qtern is also prescribed to help lower the risk of cardiovascular issues, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure, in adults with type 2 diabetes who have existing heart disease. However, it is not intended for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What does it do?

Qtern works by combining two different mechanisms (dapagliflozin and saxagliptin) to help manage type 2 diabetes. Dapagliflozin promotes the elimination of excess glucose through the kidneys, while saxagliptin helps regulate insulin release after meals. Together, these two components help improve blood sugar control while also reducing the risk of heart-related complications.

How should I take it?

Qtern should be taken once daily in the morning, with or without food. The recommended dose is 10 mg dapagliflozin / 5 mg saxagliptin per tablet. If you're new to dapagliflozin, your doctor may recommend a starting dose of 5 mg dapagliflozin / 5 mg saxagliptin before increasing the dose if needed.

Swallow the tablet whole without crushing, cutting, or chewing. Before starting treatment and throughout its duration, assess renal function regularly. Avoid strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitors like ketoconazole or ritonavir, as they may impact the drug’s effectiveness. Additionally, discontinue Qtern for at least three days before major surgery or extended fasting.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Qtern take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed one and continue following your usual schedule. Avoid taking extra or double doses to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Qtern?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Before taking Qtern, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

  • Avoid taking Qtern if you have a known allergy to Dapagliflozin, Saxagliptin, or any of its components.
  • Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:
    • Bladder cancer
    • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
    • Kidney disease
    • Gallbladder problems
    • Liver problems
    • Heart failure
    • Scheduled surgery
  • Qtern should not be used by individuals with severe kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis. Your doctor may evaluate your kidney function before and during treatment.
  • Qtern is not recommended for use during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Do not give this medication to others, even if they have similar condition, as it may pose health risks.
  • Patients with type 2 diabetes may have an increased risk of developing ketoacidosis, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Qtern can cause dehydration, leading to dizziness or weakness, especially in elderly patients or those on diuretics.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Headache
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Genital infection
  • Increased or frequent urination
  • Sore throat or nasal congestion
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Difficuly breathing
  • Heart failure
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
This is not a complete list of all possible side effects, and others may occur. For more information about side effects, please consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Qtern (Dapagliflozin/Saxagliptin) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some medications may significantly affect Qtern’s effectiveness or increase the risk of serious side effects.

Before taking Qtern, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Diuretic, also called a water pill
  • Lithium
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Other medicine for diabetes
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Qtern with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Qtern should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Keep it away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Qtern, it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Symptoms of an overdose may include extreme dizziness, confusion, severe dehydration, or difficulty breathing.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Qtern (Dapagliflozin/Saxagliptin) is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If pregnancy is detected, Qtern should be discontinued immediately. Studies show that Dapagliflozin may impact fetal kidney development, particularly during the second and third trimesters, while Saxagliptin has demonstrated reproductive toxicity in animal studies at high doses.

For breastfeeding, studies show that Dapagliflozin and Saxagliptin have been found in animal milk, but their presence in human milk is unknown. Due to potential risks to the infant’s kidney development, Qtern should not be used while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on whether Qtern is appropriate for you.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
