Why is Qualaquin prescribed?

Qualaquin (Quinine Sulfate) is used to treat malaria, a disease that is usually transmitted through mosquito bites. Qualaquin is not effective for treating severe forms of malaria, and it should not be used for malaria prevention.

What does it do?

Qualaquin is an antimalarial medication that targets Plasmodium falciparum, one form of the malaria parasite. It works by disrupting several cellular processes essential for the parasite's growth and survival.

How should I take it?

Take this medication by mouth with food (to help reduce stomach upset) as prescribed by your doctor, typically every 8 hours for 3 to 7 days. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on factors such as your medical condition, the country where you were infected, any other malaria medications you may be taking, and your response to the treatment. For children, the dosage is based on their weight.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss Qualaquin, take it as soon as you remember. Yet, if more than 4 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Qualaquin?

Do not use Qualaquin if you have ever had an allergic reaction or similar medications, such as mefloquine or quinidine, or if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Long QT syndrome (a heart rhythm disorder)
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G-6-PD)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve)
  • A history of blood cell disorders, severe bleeding, or kidney problems caused by Qualaquin
  • To ensure Qualaquin is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have:
  • Heart disease or a heart rhythm disorder
  • Low platelet levels in your blood
  • Low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia)
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Do not give this medication to children under 16 years old.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
      Common side effects may include:
  • Blurred vision, headache, or changes in color vision
  • Sweating or flushing
  • Mild dizziness, ringing in your ears
  • Upset stomach and pain, or vomiting
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Flu-like symptoms, or sores in your mouth and throat
  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (e.g., vagina, nose, mouth, or rectum), or purple/red pinpoint spots under your skin
  • Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of your body), slurred speech, sudden severe headache, or balance issues
  • Chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, or coughing up blood
  • Vision or hearing problems
  • Pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs
  • Low blood sugar (more common in pregnant women)
  • Severe pain in your side or lower back, blood in your urine, or little/no urine
  • Qualaquin can cause serious side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms listed.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. For advice on side effects, contact your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

While some medications should never be used together, in other situations, two different drugs may be prescribed together despite the potential for interactions. In these cases, your doctor may adjust the dosage or take additional precautions. It is particularly important for your doctor to know if you are taking any of the medications listed below.

Using this medicine with any of the following medications is generally not recommended. Your doctor may choose not to prescribe this medication or may adjust the other medicines you are taking.
  • Acetazolamide
  • Antacids
  • Antiepileptic
  • Erythromycin
  • Isoniazid
  • Ranitidine
  • Taking this medicine with any of the following medications may increase the risk of certain side effects, but using both drugs may still be the most appropriate treatment for you. If both medications are prescribed together, your doctor may adjust the dosage or frequency of one or both medicines:
  • Atorvastatin
  • Fosphenytoin
  • Phenytoin
  • Rifapentine
  • Tetracycline
  • Qualaquin can interact with many medications, and not all possible interactions are listed here. Be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, as well as any new ones you start or stop during treatment with this medicine.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

An overdose of Qualaquin can lead to serious complications, including vision problems, heart arrhythmias, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and even death. Contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency department to prevent severe complications or life-threatening situations.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when absolutely necessary. Be sure to discuss the potential risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options with your doctor. Untreated malaria can be a serious condition that poses risks to both the pregnant woman and her unborn baby.

This medication does pass into breast milk, but it is unlikely to harm most nursing infants. However, your doctor may test your baby for a specific enzyme deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or G6PD) before you begin breastfeeding. Always consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
