Why is Rapamune prescribed?

Rapamune (Sirolimus) is a prescription medication used to prevent organ rejection in individuals aged 13 and older who have undergone a kidney transplant. Rejection occurs when the body's immune system identifies the transplanted organ as a foreign threat and tries to attack it. Rapamune is typically used in combination with other medications, such as cyclosporine (Gengraf, Sandimmune, Neoral), and corticosteroids.

What does it do?

Rapamune works by suppressing the body's immune system, helping it accept the transplanted organ as though it were its own. Additionally, sirolimus may be used to treat a specific lung condition called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).

How should I take it?

Take this medication by mouth as prescribed by your doctor, typically once a day. Swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them. If you experience nausea or an upset stomach, you can take the medication with food. The dosage will depend on your weight, medical condition, lab results, and how you respond to the treatment.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Rapamune, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Rapamune?

You should not use Rapamune if you have ever had a lung or liver transplant.

Rapamune may cause an overproduction of white blood cells, which can increase the risk of cancer, severe brain infections that may lead to disability or death, or viral infections that could cause kidney transplant failure. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: fever, flu-like symptoms, pain or burning during urination, new skin lesions, changes in mental state, vision problems, weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or walking, or pain around your transplant.

Before using Rapamune, do not take it if you are allergic to sirolimus, or if you have previously had a lung or liver transplant. Discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication with your doctor.

Rapamune can affect your immune system and may cause an overproduction of certain white blood cells, potentially leading to cancer, severe brain infections, or viral infections that could harm a kidney transplant. To ensure Rapamune is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Liver disease
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
  • A family history of Melanoma

  • Do not let Rapamune oral liquid come into contact with your skin. If it does, wash the affected area with soap and water. If the medication gets into your eyes, rinse them with plain water.
  • Grapefruit can interact with sirolimus and cause unwanted side effects. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Rapamune.
  • Do not receive any "live" vaccines while on Rapamune.
  • Does it have any side effects?

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
