Why is Simbrinza prescribed?

Simbrinza (Brinzolamide/Brimonidine tartrate) 1%/0.2% is a combination of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, designed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in individuals with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

What does it do?

This product contains two active ingredients used to treat elevated eye pressure caused by open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By lowering eye pressure, it helps reduce the risk of vision loss, nerve damage, or blindness. It combines brinzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and brimonidine, an alpha agonist, which work together to reduce fluid production in the eye.

This medication is not recommended for children under 2 years old due to a higher risk of severe side effects, such as dangerously slow breathing. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take it?

Before applying the eye drops, wash your hands thoroughly. To prevent contamination, avoid touching the dropper tip or allowing it to come into contact with your eye or any other surface.

Tilt your head back, look up, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch. Hold the dropper above your eye and place one drop into the pouch. Look down, softly close your eyes, and use one finger to apply gentle pressure to the corner of your eye (near the nose) for 1 to 2 minutes. This helps prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink or rub your eye. If you need to use the drops in both eyes, repeat the steps for the other eye. Do not rinse the dropper, and make sure to replace the cap after each use.

The preservative in this product can be absorbed by contact lenses, so remove your lenses before using the eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting your lenses back in.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss to apply Simbrinza, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Simbrinza?

Simbrinza (brinzolamide / brimonidine) may cause serious health issues, and certain groups may be at higher risk. If you are concerned about these risks, discuss alternative options with your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have an allergy to sulfa medications (e.g., Bactrim, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim), inform your healthcare provider before using Simbrinza as it may cause severe allergic reactions.

Simbrinza contains brinzolamide, which may increase the risk of corneal edema (swelling of the cornea) in some individuals as well as existing circulatory problems in the brain, heart, or extremities. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider of your complete medical history so they can monitor your health appropriately while you use Simbrinza.

To prevent contamination and reduce the risk of eye infections (such as bacterial keratitis), always wash your hands before using Simbrinza. Avoid letting the dropper tip come into contact with your eye or any other surface, including your hands..

Simbrinza contains a preservative called benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and may cause damage. Be sure to remove your soft contact lenses before applying the drops. Wait at least 15 minutes after using Simbrinza before putting your contacts back in.

Does it have any side effects?

Some side effects may improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor right away.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Altered taste (bad taste in mouth)
  • Blurry vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Eye irritation or allergies
    • Other side effects may include:
  • Burning or stinging in the eye
  • Redness of the eye
  • Headache
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Allergic reaction: skin rash (hives), itching, redness or swelling of the eyes, difficulty breathing
  • Other side effects may occur in some individuals. If you notice anything unusual, consult your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Inform your doctor if you are taking or using any other medications, including other eye drops or ointments.

Some medicines may interact with Simbrinza or enhance its effects. These include:

  • Isoprenaline, prazosin
  • Salicylates such as aspirin
  • Digoxin (used for heart failure)
  • Antiviral or antibiotic medications
  • Medications for lowering blood pressure
  • Other glaucoma medications or eye drops
  • Chlorpromazine, methylphenidate, reserpine
  • CNS depressants such as alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, or anesthetics
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like acetazolamide, methazolamide, and dorzolamide, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or other antidepressants like clomipramine, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, and mianserin
  • These medicines may interact with Simbrinza or affect how well it works. Your doctor may need to adjust the doses of your current medications or recommend alternatives. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information about medicines to avoid or use with caution while taking Simbrinza.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Do not leave the bottle cap off for any extended period to prevent contaminating the eye drops. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you accidentally apply multiple drops to your eyes, immediately rinse your eyes with warm water. This medicine can be harmful if swallowed. If someone overdoses and experiences serious symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency department.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

This product should be used during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary. Be sure to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is not known whether this product passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
