Why is Tamiflu prescribed?

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) is a prescription antiviral used to treat acute, uncomplicated influenza A and B in patients 2 weeks and older, provided it is started within 48 hours of symptom onset. It is also indicated for influenza prophylaxis in patients 1 year and older following known exposure or during community outbreaks. Off-label, clinicians may extend treatment beyond 48 hours for hospitalized or severely ill patients and may treat infants under 2 weeks under emergency or critical-care guidance.

What does it do?

Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor. After oral dosing it’s converted by hepatic esterases to its active form, oseltamivir carboxylate, which binds to the viral neuraminidase enzyme on influenza A and B. By blocking neuraminidase, it prevents cleavage of sialic acid residues on host cell surfaces, inhibiting release of new virions and halting spread of infection.

How should I take it?

Take Tamiflu exactly as prescribed by your doctor, with or without food, though food may help reduce gastric upset. Swallow the capsules whole without cutting, crushing, or chewing them.

  • Adults & Teens (=13 years): Treatment requires 75 mg twice daily for 5 days, while prophylaxis involves 75 mg once daily for 10 days (up to 6 weeks during outbreaks).
  • Renal Impairment: Dose adjustments are necessary for creatinine clearance <60 mL/min (see product label)
For maximum effectiveness, begin within 48 hours of exposure or symptom onset and complete the full course, even if you start feeling better.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Tamiflu, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is within two hours, skip the missed dose and take only the next one. Avoid doubling up or taking extra doses.

What are the special precautions before taking Tamiflu?

Before taking Tamiflu, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

Do not take Tamiflu if you're allergic to Oseltamivir or any of the ingredients in the medication.

  • Kidney disease (including dialysis)
  • Heart disease
  • Brain swelling or neurological disorders
  • Weakened immune system
  • Hereditary fructose intolerance
  • Recent nasal flu vaccine (within the past 2 weeks)

If you are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor to understand the potential risks and benefits of taking this medication.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat
  • Neuropsychiatric symptoms
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Before taking Tamiflu, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Entecavir
  • Llive nasal flu vaccine
  • Probenecid
  • Methotrexate or warfarin
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Tamiflu with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Tamiflu should be stored in its original container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep the medication in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Tamiflu (Oseltamivir), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, abdominal pain, or neuropsychiatric symptoms like confusion or unusual behavior.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, provided the benefits outweigh potential risks. The CDC and FDA recommend Tamiflu as the preferred antiviral for pregnant women with suspected or confirmed influenza due to their increased risk of severe complications. Regarding breastfeeding,

Tamiflu and its active metabolite are excreted into breast milk at very low levels (around 0.5% of the maternal dose), which is considered sub-therapeutic for infants. The CDC deems it compatible with breastfeeding, and no harmful effects have been reported in nursing infants. Still, consult your healthcare provider to assess your health status, timing, and flu severity.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
