Why is Treximet prescribed?

Treximet is a medication prescribed for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It is not intended for the prevention of migraines or for the treatment of other headache types, such as cluster headaches.

What does it do?

Treximet is a combination medication used to relieve migraines, pairing two active ingredients with complementary actions. Sumatriptan, a triptan, narrows widened cranial blood vessels to ease migraine-related pain and swelling. Naproxen, on the other hand, is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that blocks chemical messengers responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. Together, they target both vascular and inflammatory pathways involved in migraine pathophysiology.

How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. For adults, Treximet is typically taken at the onset of migraine symptoms, with a dosage of one tablet containing 85 mg of sumatriptan and 500 mg of naproxen. If necessary, a second dose may be taken at least two hours later but should not exceed two tablets in a 24-hour period. Treximet can be taken with or without food, but it should be swallowed whole without crushing, chewing, or splitting the tablet.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Treximet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and proceed with your usual dosing routine. Do not take extra or double doses to make up for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Treximet?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not take Treximet if you're allergic to Sumatriptan, Naproxen, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Blood vessel problems
  • Fluid retention (edema)
  • Stomach problems
  • High cholesterol
  • Seizures

Treximet may impair your alertness or coordination, so avoid driving or engaging in activities that require full attention until you understand how the medication affects you.

Do not give this medicine to a child without medical guidance, as imipramine is not approved for treating depression in individuals under 18 years old.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach upset
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Chest discomfort
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Anemia
  • Heart attack or stroke
  • Arrhythmias
  • Serotonin syndrome
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Treximet (Sumatriptan/Naproxen) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Before taking Treximet, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Phenelzine
  • Lithium
  • Diuretics
  • Digoxin
  • Other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Treximet with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Treximet should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), to maintain its effectiveness. Be sure to protect it from excess heat, moisture, and light, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Treximet (Sumatriptan/Naproxen), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe dizziness, fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, seizures, severe stomach pain, or slurred speech.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Treximet (Sumatriptan/Naproxen) requires caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks. Treximet is not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy due to risks to fetal cardiovascular development and should be used with caution in earlier stages under medical supervision. While for breastfeeding, short-term use may be acceptable, but nursing should be avoided for at least 12 hours after a dose to minimize infant exposure, particularly in newborns and preterm infants.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its use to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
