Why is Triumeq prescribed?

Triumeq (Abacavir/Dolutegravir/Lamivudine) is prescribed to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients who weigh 25 kilograms or more. It is a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral agents used as part of antiretroviral therapy (ART).

What does it do?

Triumeq combines three antiretroviral agents:

  • Dolutegravir: An integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks HIV integrase, preventing viral DNA from integrating into the host genome.
  • Abacavir & Lamivudine: Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV uses to replicate.
Triumeq is not a cure for HIV, but it helps lower the amount of virus in the body and maintain it at manageable levels. By doing so, it helps protect the immune system and delay or prevent the onset of infections and illnesses linked to AIDS.

How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. Triumeq is taken as one tablet once daily, with or without food, and must be used exactly as prescribed to maintain effective viral suppression.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Triumeq, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and proceed with your usual dosing routine. Do not take extra or double doses to make up for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Triumeq?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not take Triumeq if you're allergic to Abacavir, Dolutegravir, Lamivudine, or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:

  • Heart problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Liver problems

Test for HLA-B*5701 allele before starting. Presence of this gene increases risk of serious hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir and If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding, it's important to talk with your healthcare provider to carefully weigh the potential risks and benefits of using this medication.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Lactic acidosis
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Triumeq (Abacavir/Dolutegravir/Lamivudine) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug.

Before taking Triumeq, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Dofetilide
  • Fampridine
  • Rifampicin
  • St. John’s wort
  • Other medicine for HIV or AIDS
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Triumeq with other medications to ensure safety.

How should I store it?

Triumeq should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), to maintain its effectiveness. Be sure to protect it from excess heat, moisture, and light, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Triumeq (Abacavir/Dolutegravir/Lamivudine), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include muscle pain, difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue, dark urine, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever, or rashes.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Triumeq requires caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, because dolutegravir has been linked to a slight increase in neural tube defects when taken around conception. As a precaution, pregnancy testing and reliable contraception are advised before starting treatment. If pregnancy occurs, a healthcare provider should reassess the risks and benefits of continuing Triumeq. During breastfeeding, use is generally discouraged, as HIV can be transmitted through breast milk and the active ingredients in Triumeq can pass into the infant, possibly causing harm.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
