Why is Truvada prescribed?

Truvada (Emtricitabine / Tenofovir) is prescribed for the following conditions:

As part of a combination therapy for treating HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 17 kilograms.

For pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to help reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 in at-risk adults and adolescents who weigh 35 kilograms or more.

    What does it do?

Truvada contains two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), emtricitabine and tenofovir, which work together to inhibit reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV relies on to replicate its genetic material. This action helps lower the viral load and preserve immune system function in individuals with HIV. When used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Truvada acts to prevent HIV from establishing infection in the body following exposure.

    How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. Truvada is typically taken as one tablet daily, containing 200 mg of emtricitabine and 300 mg of tenofovir, and may be taken with or without food. For best results, it must be used consistently to maintain adequate drug levels in the body. When used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), it’s important to undergo HIV testing before starting treatment and every three months thereafter to ensure continued safety and effectiveness.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Truvada, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and proceed with your usual dosing routine. Do not take extra or double doses to make up for the missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Truvada?

Before taking Truvada, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

Do not take Truvada if you're allergic to Emtricitabine, Tenofovir, or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:

      • Bone problems
      • Liver problems
      • Kidney problems
      • Kidney dialysis treatment

Truvada should not be used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in individuals who are HIV-positive or have not confirmed a negative HIV status.

A reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) may occur during treatment, so it’s advisable to assess BMD in individuals who have a history of pathologic fractures or possess other risk factors for osteoporosis or bone loss.

It’s essential to take Truvada exactly as prescribed, because missing doses may increase your risk of acquiring HIV-1 infection.

Never share this medication with others, even if their condition seems similar, as it could lead to unforeseen health risks or harmful side effects.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
        Common side effects may include:
      • Abdominal pain
      • Headache
      • Nausea
      • Diarrhea
      • Fatigue
        Serious side effects may include:
      • Bone loss
      • Lactic acidosis
      • Liver toxicity
      • Kidney dysfunction
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Before taking Truvada, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

      • Carbamazepine
      • Ibuprofen
      • Oxcarbazepine
      • Phenytoin
      • Phenobarbital
This is not a complete list of all the potential drug interactions, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining Truvada with other medications to ensure safety.

      How should I store it?

Truvada should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), to maintain its effectiveness. Always check the packaging for specific storage instructions and never use it past its expiration date.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, or severe headache.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Truvada is generally considered safe during pregnancy, especially for HIV-positive individuals, as it helps prevent transmission to the baby. Large registry data show no increase in birth defects linked to its use. While both emtricitabine and tenofovir cross the placenta, they’ve not been associated with harmful effects in fetuses. During breastfeeding, both components are present in breast milk. Truvada may be used with caution for HIV-negative women on PrEP, but breastfeeding is discouraged for HIV-positive mothers due to the risk of passing the virus to the infant.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its use to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
