Why is Vasotec prescribed?

Vasotec is prescribed for several cardiovascular and renal conditions. Its primary uses include treating high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged one month or older, managing symptomatic heart failure, and improving survival in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Additionally, it helps slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease, providing renal protection in patients with diabetes-related complications.

What does it do?

Vasotec is classified as an ACE inhibitor (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor). It works by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By inhibiting the formation of angiotensin II, Vasotec facilitates vasodilation, thereby lowering blood pressure and alleviating cardiac strain, enhancing the management of conditions such as hypertension and heart failure.

How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. For adults taking Vasotec (Enalapril), the usual dose for hypertension starts at 5 mg once daily, with maintenance ranging from 10 to 40 mg daily, either as a single dose or split into two. If taken with diuretics, an initial dose of 2.5 mg is recommended, ideally pausing the diuretic 2–3 days beforehand. For congestive heart failure, treatment typically begins at 2.5 mg once daily, with maintenance doses between 2.5 and 20 mg split into two doses and a maximum of 40 mg per day.

Enalapril can be taken with or without food, and if using the oral solution, it should be well shaken and accurately measured with a proper device. Even if you feel well, it's crucial to stick to your prescribed enalapril regimen, as high blood pressure typically has no obvious signs or symptoms.

What if I missed a dose?

If you forget to take your dose of Vasotec, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the one you missed and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Avoid taking additional or double doses, as this can increase the risk of adverse effects.

What are the special precautions before taking Vasotec?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history. Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Diabetes
  • Currently on a low-salt diet

Avoid sharing Vasotec with others even if their condition appears similar, as doing so may result in unexpected health risks or dangerous side effects.

Vasotec should not be used if you've previously experienced angioedema, a serious swelling reaction caused by ACE inhibitors.

Avoid using Vasotec (enalapril) within 36 hours before or after taking any medication that contains sacubitril, such as Entresto.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Dry cough
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Angioedema
  • Low blood pressure (Hypotension)
  • High potassium (Hyperkalemia)
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (Jaundice)
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Vasotec (Enalapril) can interact with various medications, so it's important to check for potential interactions before taking it with another drug. Some interactions may increase side effects or reduce effectiveness. Before taking Vasotec, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:
  • Aspirin
  • Diuretic or "water pill"
  • Ibuprofen
  • Lithium
  • Allopurinol
This is not a full list of possible drug interactions. To ensure your safety, it's essential to speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Vasotec alongside other medications, including over-the-counter drugs or supplements.

How should I store it?

To ensure safe storage of Vasotec, keep tablets at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Always store both forms in tightly closed containers and out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you suspect an overdose of Vasotec (Enalapril), it's important to act quickly and seek immediate medical attention. Contact emergency services or go to the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms may include severe hypotension, fainting or extreme dizziness, electrolyte imbalances, or kidney dysfunction.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Vasotec (Enalapril) is not considered safe during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to risks of fetal injury or death. It should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is detected. While small amounts may pass into breast milk, adverse effects in breastfed infants are unlikely, though caution is advised and monitoring is recommended if used during lactation.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on its use to ensure safety for both you and your baby.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
