Why is Venclexta prescribed?

Venclexta is prescribed for adults to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), as well as for the initial treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in patients aged 75 years and older or those who are unsuitable for intensive chemotherapy. This targeted approach supports therapeutic management of both newly diagnosed and existing hematologic malignancies.

What does it do?

Venclexta is a targeted therapy known as a BCL-2 inhibitor, distinct from traditional chemotherapy. It works by binding to the BCL-2 protein, which typically prevents cancer cells from undergoing apoptosis, or programmed cell death. By inhibiting this protein, Venclexta reactivates the cell’s natural self-destruct mechanism, thereby promoting the elimination of malignant cells.

How should I take it?

Always follow your doctor’s instructions, or the directions on the product label when taking this medication. Venclexta treatment should be taken once daily, with food and water at the same time each day. The tablets must be swallowed whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking them. To minimize the risk of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), therapy begins with a gradual week dose escalation.

It can also be in combination with Obinutuzumab, Rituximab or Monotherapy with recommended dosage of 400 mg once daily after week completion.

Patients should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily starting two days before the first dose and continue this intake during dose increases.

What if I missed a dose?

If a dose of Venclexta is missed and less than eight hours have passed, the medication should be taken as soon as possible. If more than eight hours have elapsed, the missed dose should be skipped and the next dose taken at the regularly scheduled time. Doubling up on doses is not recommended. In the event of vomiting after taking a dose, an additional dose should not be taken. Treatment should be resumed at the next scheduled dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Venclexta?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history. Before taking Venclexta, here are several important precautions to keep in mind:

Do not take Venclexta if you're allergic to Venetoclax or any of the ingredients in the medication.

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Gout or high uric acid levels

Venclexta may impair coordination, so it is advised not to drive, operate machinery, or engage in any activities that require physical coordination until you understand how the medication affects you personally.

Avoid sharing Venclexta with others even if their condition appears similar, as doing so may result in unexpected health risks or dangerous side effects.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Pneumonia
  • Low Neutrophil Levels (Neutropenia)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tumor lysis syndrome
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Venclexta (Venetoclax) has the potential to interact with a wide range of medications, which can either heighten the risk of side effects or diminish its therapeutic effectiveness.

Before taking Venclexta, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

  • Digoxin
  • Fluconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Indinavir
  • Ritonavir
This is not a full list of possible drug interactions. To ensure your safety, it's essential to speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Venclexta alongside other medications, including over-the-counter drugs or supplements.

How should I store it?

Venclexta should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), to maintain its effectiveness. Be sure to protect it from excess heat, moisture, and light, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

In case of a Venclexta (Venetoclax) overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact emergency services, as serious complications may occur. Overdose symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, confusion, irregular heartbeat, seizures, dark or cloudy urine, and muscle or joint pain.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Venclexta is not considered safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. It may cause harm to the fetus based on animal studies, including post-implantation loss and reduced fetal weight. Women of reproductive potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for 30 days after the last dose.

Breastfeeding is also not recommended during treatment and for 1 week after the final dose, as it is unknown whether the drug passes into human milk and may pose risks to the infant.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
