Why is Viread prescribed?

Viread (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) is an antiretroviral medication used in combination with other drugs to treat Hepatitis B and manage symptoms of HIV infection. While it is not a cure for either condition, it can help reduce the risk of spreading Hepatitis B or HIV to others, though it does not eliminate the risk entirely.

What does it do?

Viread helps prevent the spread of HIV within your body, protecting and preserving the immune system while reducing the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

For individuals with Hepatitis B, Viread it works to stop the spread of the Hepatitis B virus, helping to protect the liver and prevent further damage from the virus.

How should I take it?

Take this medicine by mouth once a day or as directed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking it, even if you feel better. Missing doses can cause the HIV virus to become resistant to this medication and others. Only stop taking it if your doctor advises you to do so.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next one. Do not take two doses at once.

Missing doses of Viread can reduce its effectiveness over time, so it’s crucial not to skip or miss any doses.

What are the special precautions before taking Viread?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history and if you have any of the following conditions:
  • A history of unusual or allergic reactions to tenofovir
  • Bone problems
  • Drink alcohol-containing beverages
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Viread helps manage HIV infection but does not cure it. Additionally, it does not protect against or prevent the transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), such as Herpes, Gonorrhea, or Chlamydia.

If you have both HIV and Hepatitis B, stopping Viread can lead to a serious flare-up or worsening of your hepatitis B. Your doctor will test you for hepatitis B before or when starting this medication. Never run out of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate or stop taking it without first consulting your doctor. If you have HIV and Hepatitis B, make sure to attend all follow-up appointments for blood tests to monitor your liver health.

Viread should not be used with the following medications:

  • Tenofovir alafenamide
  • Adefovir dipivoxil
  • Didanosine

This list may not include all possible interactions. Be sure to provide your doctor with a complete list of all medications you are taking.

    How should I store it?

Store this medication at room temperature, between 15 to 30°C. Keep it in its original container. Dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
