Why is Wartec prescribed?

Podophyllotoxin (Wartec) cream is prescribed for the treatment of warts on the external surface of the genitals or around the anus in men and women. However, it is not suitable for warts found on mucous membranes of the genital area or the anus.

What does it do?

Genital warts are a type of sexually transmitted infection that can either appear as small bumps or large clusters. The symptoms of genital warts may include itching or discomfort in the 12genitals and bleeding during intercourse. Podophyllotoxin belongs to a drug class called antimitotics and it works by invading the tissue of the wart, disrupts cell division, and prevents growth until the wart detaches from the skin surface.

How should I apply it?

Wartec and its generic equivalents are currently available as a 0.15% cream. Avoid getting Wartec into your eyes or mouth.

The dosage strength depends on every patient’s condition and the doctor’s prescription. It is imperative that you do not self-medicate and only use this drug after consulting with your doctor or pharmacist to determine the best dosage and dosing schedule for the treatment of your condition.

What if I missed a dose?

The desired effects of prescribed medications will only be achieved if used properly. As much as possible, strictly follow your doctor’s prescribed dosing schedule. However, if you miss a dose, apply it immediately and adjust the time of your next dose depending on your doctor’s advice. Never apply two doses at the same time just to make up for your missed dose.

What are the special precautions before applying Wartec?

Before applying Podophyllotoxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to food or to the drug itself as it may contain several inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or problems.

Podophyllotoxin may cause harmful effects when applied to healthy skin. Exercise caution when applying the medication.

Avoid sexual contact or use condoms when using Podophyllotoxin to prevent further spread of genital warts.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.

    Common side effects include:
  • Itching
  • Mild irritation
  • Redness
  • Stinging sensation
  • Tenderness in the treated area
    Serious side effects include:
  • Bleeding
  • Blister formation
  • Severe burning sensation
  • Severe itching
  • Skin discoloration
  • Skin ulcer formation
  • Swelling
Other side effects not listed above may be experienced when using Wartec. If the symptoms do not go away or are life-threatening, immediately stop taking the medication and inform your doctor or call an ambulance for professional medical assistance.

Is it safe to use it with another drug?

Wartec has no known interactions with other medications. However, take caution when using other topical products at the same time. Concomitant use with other products may increase the risk of adverse reactions.

If you are using any prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medications, inform your doctor and pharmacist for proper information and ask for other possible interactions not listed within this section.

How should I store it?

Store Wartec at room temperature (25 °C) in a clean environment away from light and moisture, as well as children and pets. Do not refrigerate. Do not remove the desiccant in the original container. Throw away if unused or expired. Do not flush in the toilet. Consult the pharmacist for proper disposal.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Call an ambulance and seek immediate medical attention to prevent further complications or possible death.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

There are only limited studies and data regarding the safety of Podophyllotoxin to determine drug-associated risks of major maternal defects, miscarriages, and fetal outcomes.

Limited data have been established indicating the presence of Podophyllotoxin in human milk. Consult your doctor first before breastfeeding.

The use of Podophyllotoxin in pregnant and breastfeeding women should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey, and Singapore.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
