Why is Xadago prescribed?

Xadago is a prescription medication classified as a monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor. It is used in combination with levodopa and carbidopa to treat adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who experience "off" episodes. The safety and effectiveness of Xadago in children have not been established.

What does it do?

Xadago is part of a class of medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It is thought to boost the levels of a natural chemical called dopamine in the brain, helping to reduce the movement-related symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

How should I take it?

Take Xadago exactly as prescribed by your doctor best same time everyday as the usual dose is once a day.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose skip it and take your next dose of Xadago at the same time on the following day.

What are the special precautions before taking Xadago?

Before taking Xadago, inform your doctor about all your medical conditions, especially if you:

  • High blood pressure
  • Have a sleep disorder, experience unexpected daytime sleepiness, or take medication to help you sleep
  • Consume alcoholic beverages, as this may increase drowsiness or sleepiness while on Xadago
  • Have a history of abnormal movements (dyskinesia)
  • Have or have had mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or psychosis
  • Have or have had retinal problems in your eyes, or if there is a family history of retinal issues
  • Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
      Common side effects may include:
  • Uncontrolled sudden movements (Dyskinesia)
  • Nausea
  • Trouble sleeping (Insomnia)
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • High blood pressure (Hypertension): Xadago may raise or worsen high blood pressure. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure while you take this medication.
  • Serotonin syndrome: A potentially life-threatening condition that may occur when Xadago is taken with certain other medications. Symptoms include agitation, hallucinations, confusion, muscle twitching, rapid heartbeat, high or low blood pressure, sweating, fever, muscle stiffness, seizures, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Sudden sleep episodes: You may fall asleep unexpectedly during normal activities, such as driving, working, or using machinery. This is more likely if you take other medications that cause drowsiness. Inform your healthcare provider if this occurs and avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Xadago affects you.
  • Worsening dyskinesia: Xadago may cause or increase uncontrolled movements. If this happens, your doctor may adjust your Parkinson’s medication.
  • Hallucinations and psychosis: Xadago can cause or worsen psychotic symptoms like hallucinations, confusion, agitation, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Discuss any changes with your healthcare provider.
  • Unusual urges: Some people taking Xadago may experience strong, uncontrollable urges, such as the desire to gamble, increased sexual urges, excessive spending, or binge eating. If you or your family notice these behaviors, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Retinal problems: Changes in eyesight may occur. Notify your doctor if you experience any changes in vision.
  • These are not all possible side effects. For medical advice on side effects, contact your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications and other supplements you are taking.

Before using Xadago, be sure to discuss if you have taken any of the following in the past two weeks

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including those used for depression or Parkinson’s disease, as well as intravenous methylene blue or the antibiotic linezolid.
  • Isoniazid
  • Opioids
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), commonly used for anxiety and depression.
  • Tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants, like amitriptyline, nortriptyline, or protriptyline, even if not used for depression.
  • Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant found in many cold and flu medications.
  • Decongestants (oral or nasal) such as pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, or oxymetazoline, used for nasal congestion.
  • Eye drops like brimonidine, used to treat glaucoma.
  • Methylphenidate or amphetamines, commonly used for ADHD.
  • This may not be a complete list of medications that can interact with Xadago, so always consult your healthcare provider for more information.

    How should I store it?

Store the medication in a tightly closed container at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you take an excessive amount of Xadago, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room immediately as it can cause extreme hypertension.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

It is unclear whether Xadago could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

It is also unknown if Xadago passes into breast milk. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. They will provide guidance on whether you should take Xadago while breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
