Why is Xigduo XR prescribed?

Xigduo XR is prescribed to help control blood sugar levels in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in combination with diet and exercise. In addition to managing glucose levels, it also helps reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure, worsening kidney disease, and cardiovascular death in patients with diabetes who have heart or kidney conditions.

What does it do?

Xigduo XR is a combination medication used to manage type 2 diabetes. It contains two active ingredients that work synergistically to control blood sugar and support heart and kidney health:

  • Dapagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor): Helps the body excrete excess glucose through urine and reduces sodium and water retention, which can ease strain on the heart and kidneys.
  • Metformin (a biguanide): Lowers glucose production in the liver, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Together, these medications not only improve glycemic control but also offer protective benefits for patients with cardiovascular or renal complications.

How should I take it?

Xigduo XR should be individualized based on the patient’s current diabetes treatment regimen. It is administered once daily in the morning with food to enhance gastrointestinal tolerance. Tablets must be swallowed whole without crushing, cutting, or chewing them. For patients not already taking dapagliflozin, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily. If a patient requires 5 mg dapagliflozin and 2000 mg metformin HCl extended-release, this can be achieved by taking two tablets of the 2.5 mg/1000 mg formulation.

The maximum allowable daily dose is 10 mg dapagliflozin combined with 2000 mg metformin HCl extended-release. Always follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and attend regular checkups to monitor your progress.

What if I missed a dose?

If a dose of Xigduo XR is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's already close to the time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing routine. Avoid taking additional or double doses, as this can increase the risk of adverse effects.

What are the special precautions before taking Xigduo XR ?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.
  • Do not take Xigduo XR if you're allergic to Dapagliflozin, Metformin, or any of the ingredients in the medication.
  • Disclose all your current or past medical conditions to your doctor, particularly if you have:
  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems
  • Heart problems
  • Low blood pressure
  • Undergoing surgery
  • Pancreatitis
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Avoid use in patients with type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, or active infections.
  • Avoid sharing Xigduo XR with others even if their condition appears similar, as doing so may result in unexpected health risks or dangerous side effects.
  • Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
      Common side effects may include:
    • Diarrhea
    • Genital yeast infections
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Nausea
    • Headache
      Serious side effects may include:
    • Lactic acidosis
    • Diabetic ketoacidosis
    • Kidney injury or dehydration
    • Vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use
    • Low blood sugar (Hypoglycemia)
This is not a complete list of potential side effects, and additional reactions may occur. For detailed information and medical guidance, consult your healthcare provider.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Xigduo XR (Dapagliflozin/Metformin) has the potential to interact with a wide range of medications, which can either heighten the risk of side effects or diminish its therapeutic effectiveness.

Before taking Xigduo XR, consult your doctor if you are using any of the following medications:

    • Lithium
    • Diuretics or "water pill"
    • Digoxin
    • Morphine
    • Rifampin
    • Aspirin
This is not a full list of possible drug interactions. To ensure your safety, it's essential to speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Xigduo XR alongside other medications, including over-the-counter drugs or supplements.

    How should I store it?

Xigduo XR should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), to maintain its effectiveness. Be sure to protect it from excess heat, moisture, and light, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
