  • Description

NOTE: Depending on the supplier/strength selected, the products shipped may have different packaging.

Why is Ziagen prescribed?

Ziagen (Abacavir Sulfate) is used to treat HIV, the virus responsible for causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is prescribed for adults and children who are at least 3 months old. However, Abacavir does not cure HIV or AIDS.

What does it do?

Abacavir helps prevent the spread of HIV in the body by blocking an enzyme that the virus needs to replicate. By reducing the amount of HIV in the body, it helps protect and preserve the immune system.

How should I take it?

Take Ziagen exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically 1 tablet twice a day or 2 tablets once a day, with or without food.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Ziagen, take it as soon as you remember, then continue with your next dose at the regular time.

Make sure to refill your prescription before you run out of medicine. Missing several doses could lead to a serious or even fatal allergic reaction when you resume taking Abacavir.

What are the special precautions before taking Ziagen?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.
  • You have moderate or severe liver disease;
  • You have a genetic variation known as the HLA-B*5701 allele (your doctor will test for this)

Abacavir is an ingredient in many combination HIV medications, so Ziagen should not be taken with any other medication that contains Abacavir.

There is a risk of developing lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in the blood. This risk may be higher if you have other health conditions, have been on HIV medication for a long time, or are a woman. Consult your doctor about your risk.

Let your doctor know if you have a history of:
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Or if you’ve previously used other HIV medications

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Severe allergic reactions that may be fatal
  • Lactic acidosis and liver enlargement (hepatomegaly), which can be life-threatening
  • Immune system changes: As your immune system strengthens with HIV treatment, it may start fighting infections that were previously dormant, like herpes, pneumonia, or tuberculosis. If you develop new symptoms after starting treatment, inform your doctor.
  • Changes in body fat: Antiretroviral drugs like Ziagen can cause fat redistribution, such as increased fat in the upper back and neck ("buffalo hump"), breasts, and abdomen, along with possible loss of fat in the arms, legs, and face. The long-term health effects of these changes are unknown.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite.
This is not a complete list of side effects. For more information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Ziagen with any of the following medications:
  • Riociguat;
  • Methadone; or
  • Any other HIV medications.
This is not a complete list, as other drugs—both prescription and over-the-counter, including vitamins and herbal supplements—may also interact with Abacavir. Not all potential drug interactions are listed here.

How should I store it?

Store Ziagen at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Do not freeze the medication.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you take an overdose of Ziagen, contact your doctor or go emergency department as it has no specific treatment.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: The effects of Abacavir on pregnancy or unborn babies are not fully known. If you are planning to become pregnant or pregnant, inform your doctor. They will guide you on whether to take abacavir during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: Abacavir is passed into breast milk. Do not breastfeed while taking abacavir, as there may be risks associated with both the medication and HIV transmission through breast milk.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
