Why is Zithromax prescribed?

Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat specific bacterial infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and infections of the ears, sinuses, skin, throat, lungs, and reproductive organs. It is also used to treat or prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection—a type of lung infection that commonly affects individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Note: Azithromycin belongs to a group of antibiotics known as macrolides. It is important to note that azithromycin, like other antibiotics, is ineffective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Using antibiotics unnecessarily can increase the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant infections in the future.

What does it do?

Azithromycin works by preventing certain bacteria from producing the proteins they need to grow and reproduce.

How should I take it?

Take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water, following the instructions on your prescription and condition. You can take the tablets with or without food. If it causes stomach discomfort, taking it with food may help.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Zithromax, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take only the next dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Zithromax?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history. Do not use Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin or if you have:
  • A history of jaundice or liver problems caused by taking Zithromax
  • An allergy to similar antibiotics such as Clarithromycin

To ensure Zithromax is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • A heart rhythm condition
  • Low potassium levels in your blood
  • Long QT syndrome (either personally or in your family history)
Do not give Zithromax to children under 6 months of age.

Does it have any side effects?

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a serious drug reaction that may affect multiple parts of the body. Symptoms can include a flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, skin rash, severe fatigue or weakness, or yellowing of the skin. These reactions may appear several weeks after starting Zithromax.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have:
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Severe stomach pain or diarrhea that is watery or bloody
  • Rapid or pounding heartbeat or sudden dizziness (feeling like you might faint)
  • Signs of liver problems, such as upper stomach pain, dark urine, pale stools, or jaundice

Older adults may be at greater risk for heart rhythm issues, including a potentially life-threatening fast heartbeat.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or stomach pain
This is not a complete list of side effects. Other reactions may occur. Contact your healthcare provider for medical advice about any side effects you experience.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Zithromax with any of the following medications:

Avoid taking this medication with the following drugs:

  • Cisapride
  • Pimozide
  • Thioridazine
  • Dronedarone

This medication may also interact with:

  • Antacids containing Aluminum or Magnesium
  • Digoxin
  • Colchicine
  • Cyclosporine

Store at room temperature, between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). Keep it away from moisture and heat.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

In case of an overdose, contact the poison control helpline right away. If the person has difficulty breathing, has a seizure, or becomes unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: It's unknown whether Azithromycin can affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
