Why is Zortress prescribed?

Zortress, a brand of everolimus, is prescribed to help prevent organ rejection following a kidney or liver transplant. It is used in combination with cyclosporine, steroids, and other immunosuppressive medications.

What does it do?

Zortress (Everolimus) prevents organ rejection after a transplant by suppressing the immune system. It blocks a protein called mTOR, which controls immune cell activity, helping to stop the body from attacking the transplanted organ.

How should I take it?

Take Zortress exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water—do not crush or chew them. You may take Zortress with or without food, but be consistent: always take it the same way each time, either always with food or always without food.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Zortress, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is coming up soon, skip the missed dose do not take two doses at the same time.

What are the special precautions before taking Zortress?

Using Zortress may increase your risk of serious infections and certain types of cancer, such as lymphoma or skin cancer. Talk to your doctor about your individual risk.

Inform your doctor if you have a history of:
  • Lactose or galactose intolerance
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Liver disease
  • Heart transplant
  • Skin cancer in yourself or a family member
Zortress can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception while taking this medication and for at least 8 weeks after your last dose. If you become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately.

Does it have any side effects?

Treatment with everolimus can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections. If you experience signs of infection such as swollen glands, fever, or flu-like symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Zortress may cause blood clots in the vessels of your transplanted organ, particularly within the first 30 days after transplant. Notify your doctor right away if you develop fever accompanied by nausea or vomiting, blood in your urine, dark-colored urine, reduced or no urination, or pain in your stomach or groin.

    Serious side effects may include:
  • New or worsening cough or difficulty breathing
  • Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
  • Redness, swelling, discharge, warmth, or slow healing of a wound or surgical site
  • Symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst, dry mouth, fruity-smelling breath, headache, frequent urination, or blurred vision
  • Signs of anemia (low red blood cells), including pale skin, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath
    Common side effects may include:
  • Anemia and infections
  • Urination difficulties
  • Swelling in the legs or feet
  • High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Stomach discomfort
This is not a complete list of side effects. If you experience any concerning symptoms, contact your doctor for medical advice.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Some drug interactions may cause serious or life-threatening reactions when administered together. Immediately inform your doctor if you are taking Zortress with any of the following medications:
  • Aprepitant
  • Antifungal medications like Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Fluconazole, and Voriconazole
  • Cyclosporine
  • Dexamethasone
  • Nefazodone
  • Rifabutin
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Rifampin
  • Telithromycin
  • Antiviral medications for HIV or AIDS
  • Certain antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs like simvastatin
  • Medications for heart conditions or irregular heartbeat, blood pressure, including Nicardipine, Diltiazem, and Verapamil
  • Seizure medications such as Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, and Phenytoin
This list does not cover all potential interactions. Make sure to give your doctor a complete list of all prescription and products you are using.

How should I store it?

Store Zortress tablets at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C), in a dry place away from light, and out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Get emergency medical help immediately to monitor your vital signs and symptoms.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: Everolimus can harm an unborn baby. If you are capable of becoming pregnant, use effective birth control during treatment and for eight weeks after your last dose. Discuss birth control options with your doctor. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant, suspect you might be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether Everolimus passes into breast milk. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. They will advise you on whether it is safe to take Everolimus while nursing.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
