Why is Zyloprim prescribed?

Allopurinol (Zyloprim) is prescribed to treat gout, hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels in the blood) due to cancer medications, and kidney stones.

What does it do?

Gout is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. When uric acid is accumulated it can cause symptoms such as pain, kidney stones, and blockage of certain kidney structures. The use of drugs such as Allopurinol may be beneficial in these circumstances.

Allopurinol is classified as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that works by decreasing the production of uric acid levels in the body. However, it is only used in the prevention of gout attacks.

How should I take it?

Zyloprim is available as a 100mg and 300mg tablet intended for oral administration after meals to prevent stomach upset. It should be swallowed as a whole and should not be crushed, chewed, broken in half or tampered in any way. Take it with a full glass of water at the same time as prescribed and increase your water intake to reduce your risk of developing kidney stones.

The full effects of Zyloprim may not be felt immediately and may take several months to manifest. Do not alter your dose or stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

This drug should always be taken according to your doctor’s instructions. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for any concerns you may have in taking Zyloprim.

What if I missed a dose?

The desired effects of prescribed medications will only be achieved if taken properly. As much as possible, strictly follow your doctor’s prescribed dosing schedule. However, if you miss a dose, take it immediately and adjust the time of your next dose depending on your doctor’s advice. Never take two doses at the same time just to make up for your missed dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Zyloprim?

Before taking Allopurinol, inform your doctor if you are allergic to Allopurinol or other medications as this product may contain inactive ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor of your past and present medical history if you have or have had kidney disease, liver disease, or heart failure.

When taking Allopurinol for the first few times, gout attacks may occur more frequently, and it may take some time before these attacks lessen and subside. It is possible for your doctor to give you other medications to manage these gout attacks.

Taking allopurinol may cause drowsiness. Avoid alcohol intake and doing activities that require your full attention such as driving or operating machinery until you feel it is safe to do so. Inform your doctor if there is no improvement of these symptoms.

Tell your doctor of any prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to prevent interactions with these medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for other possible interactions not listed within this section.

How should I store it?

Store Zyloprim at room temperature (15-25 °C) in a clean environment away from light and moisture. Always keep it in the container it came in and keep it tightly closed. Keep out of reach from children and pets. Dispose of medications that are no longer needed or expired. Consult your pharmacist on the proper disposal of this medication.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Overdose with Allopurinol is not common. However, if you suspect an overdose, consult your doctor and seek immediate medical attention to prevent complications.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

There are a limited number of studies regarding the use of Allopurinol in pregnant women. As per US FDA, it is categorized as Pregnancy Category C which states that no potential harm and well-controlled studies have been done in humans, but animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus.

Allopurinol has been found in breast milk. However, the effect of this drug to the baby is still not known.

The use of Allopurinol in pregnant and breastfeeding women should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey, and Singapore.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
