Why is Carbolith prescribed?

Carbolith (Lithium carbonate) is used to treat bipolar disorder and mania in adults.

What does it do?

Carbolith (Lithium carbonate) helps stabilize mood and reduce behavioral extremes by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Continued use of this medication can reduce the frequency of manic episodes and alleviate symptoms of mania, such as intense feelings of well-being, irritability, anxiety, paranoia, rapid or loud speech, and aggressive or hostile behavior.

How should I take it?

Take Carbolith by mouth as prescribed by your doctor, typically 3 to 4 times a day for adults and 2 to 3 times a day for children. To reduce stomach upset, take Carbolith with or immediately after meals.

Ensure you drink 8 to 12 glasses (8 ounces/240 milliliters each) of water or other fluids daily, and follow a healthy diet with normal salt (sodium) intake as advised by your doctor or dietitian. Avoid making significant changes to your salt intake, as it can affect your lithium blood levels. Only adjust your salt intake if your doctor specifically instructs you to do so.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss Carbolith, take it as soon as you remember. If it's less than 4 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed one. If you're unsure what to do, consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

What are the special precautions before taking Carbolith?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Your doctor will need to monitor your blood levels of lithium to identify the best dose for you as lithium toxicity can occur if taken more than as needed.

Do not take lithium carbonate if you:

  • Are using diuretics
  • Are severely debilitated
  • Are severely dehydrated
  • Have significant kidney disease
  • Have significant heart disease
  • Are allergic to lithium carbonate or any of its ingredients
  • Have brain damage
  • Have low sodium levels in your blood
  • Have a condition that requires a low sodium intake

Carbolith may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Alcohol can increase these effects. Avoid driving, using machinery, or performing tasks that require full alertness or clear vision until you know how this medication affects you. Limit alcohol consumption and consult your doctor if you use marijuana.

If you experience heavy sweating or severe diarrhea, consult your doctor immediately to determine the best course of action for continuing Carbolith treatment. Be cautious in hot weather or when engaging in activities that cause heavy sweating, such as saunas, hot baths, or exercise.

Does it have any side effects?

Medications can cause side effects, which are unwanted responses that may occur even when taken at the correct dosage. These side effects can range from mild to severe and can be temporary or permanent. Not everyone will experience these side effects, but if you're concerned, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of the medication.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Altered taste
  • Diarrhea
  • Thinning or dry hair
  • Dizziness or feeling dazed
  • Hair loss
  • Increased thirst
  • Loss of appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Sleepiness or tiredness
  • Vertigo (feeling of spinning)
  • Vomiting
  • Weight changes
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • High blood calcium or Hypercalcemia for long time users
  • Kidney problems- Increased urination or loss of bladder control (more common in women)
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction (e.g., difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/throat)
  • Symptoms of a systemic hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., swollen lymph nodes, fever, severe rash)
  • Symptoms of a rare neurological disorder (e.g., extreme sleepiness, confusion, involuntary muscle contractions)
  • Other side effects may occur, and if you notice anything concerning, contact your doctor.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Certain medications can impact how lithium is eliminated from your body, potentially affecting its effectiveness. Your doctor may need to adjust your Lithium dose if you're taking any of these medications.
  • ACE inhibitors (e.g., Captopril, Enalapril)
  • ARBS (e.g., Losartan, Valsartan)
  • NSAIDS (e.g., Celecoxib, Ibuprofen)
  • Diuretics (e.g., Hydrochlorothiazide, Furosemide)
  • And other drugs for mental/mood conditions (e.g., Chlorpromazine, Thiothixene, Haloperidol).
  • The risk of serotonin syndrome or toxicity is higher if you're using other medications that increase serotonin levels. The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity may be greater when starting or increasing the dose of these drugs.

  • St. John's wort
  • Certain antidepressants (e.g., SSRIs like Fluoxetine/Paroxetine, SNRIs like Duloxetine/Venlafaxine)
  • Maintain a normal diet with average sodium intake. Ask your doctor or dietician for further guidance.

    How should I store it?

Store this medication in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If someone has overdosed and is experiencing severe symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately or reach out to a poison control center. Overdose symptoms may include: ringing in the ears, blurred vision, diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty walking, unusual drowsiness, seizures, shaking, or loss of consciousness.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Carbolith is not safe to use during pregnancy, as there is clear evidence of potential harm to the developing baby. However, in rare cases, a doctor may prescribe it in life-threatening situations if the benefits outweigh the risks. Be sure to consult your doctor for further guidance.

Lithium passes into breast milk and may cause harmful effects to a nursing infant. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication. Speak with your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
