Why is Cortef prescribed?

Cortef (Hydrocortisone) is a steroid medication used to treat a variety of conditions, including arthritis, lupus, lung issues, allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, and certain blood disorders like anemia (low red blood cells) or thrombocytopenia (low platelets).

Cortef is also prescribed to replace steroids in individuals with adrenal insufficiency, a condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough natural steroids.

What does it do?

Hydrocortisone is part of a class of medications known as corticosteroids. It is a synthetic form of a steroid hormone naturally produced by your body. Hydrocortisone helps replace low levels of steroid hormones in individuals with impaired adrenal gland function. It has anti-inflammatory properties and plays a role in regulating the body's metabolism and immune response.

How should I take it?

Take Cortef exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken orally with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, taking it with food may help. Be sure to follow the dosage and schedule your doctor has provided. Do not stop taking Cortef suddenly without consulting your doctor, as your dosage may need to be gradually reduced. Always follow your doctor’s specific instructions for your treatment

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of hydrocortisone, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one on schedule. Do not double dose. If a child vomits after taking hydrocortisone granules, contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

What are the special precautions before taking Cortef?

You should not use Cortef if you are allergic to it, other corticosteroids, or if you have a systemic fungal infection.

Steroids can weaken your immune system, making it easier to get infections or worsen existing ones. Inform your doctor about any illnesses or infections you've had in the past few weeks.

Let your doctor know if you have a history of:
  • Cirrhosis or other liver conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Depression or mental health conditions
  • Herpes eye infection
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Glaucoma or cataracts
  • Muscle disorders like myasthenia gravis
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Tuberculosis
Long-term steroid use can lead to bone loss (osteoporosis), particularly if you smoke, don’t exercise, lack sufficient vitamin D or calcium, or have a family history of osteoporosis.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
    Common side effects may include:
  • Changes in menstrual cycles
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Increased sweating
  • Stomach bloating
  • Increased appetite, weight gain

  • Increased adrenal gland hormones, which may cause increased body hair, tiredness, slow wound healing, skin discoloration, thinning skin, menstrual changes, or sexual changes
  • Severe headaches, pain behind your eyes, or ringing in your ears
  • Cortef can impact growth in children. Inform your doctor if your child is not growing at a normal rate while using Cortef.

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others that may occur. Contact your doctor for advice on any side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Certain medications may not be safe to use together, as some drugs can affect the blood levels of others, potentially increasing side effects or reducing effectiveness. Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking. Some drugs, particularly the following, may interact with Cortef:
  • Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
  • Blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven)
  • Heart medications
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medications
  • Medicines used to treat infections
  • NSAIDs
  • Seizure medications
  • . Not all possible drug interactions are included here. Always consult your doctor for any medical advise.

    How should I store it?

Store at room temperature, keeping it away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep out of the reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Overdose of Cortef (Hydrocortisone) is not life threatening, but more likely to occur when you are on longer treatment consult your doctor and seek medical help immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Cortef should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor. It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
