Why is Descovy prescribed?

Descovy is used to prevent HIV infection (known as HIV PrEP) and also to treat HIV in individuals with a confirmed HIV-1 infection, in combination with other antiviral medications.

What does it do?

Descovy is a prescription medication that contains two antiviral drugs, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir alafenamide. Both medications work by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, an enzyme produced by HIV that enables the virus to infect cells and replicate. They are both part of a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).

How should I take it?

The standard dosage is one Descovy tablet taken orally once a day. You can take Descovy with or without food.

What if I missed a dose?

If you forget to take your usual dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it's still the same day. Do not take a double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Descovy?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

Do not take Descovy for HIV-1 PrEP if:
  • You are already HIV-1 positive. If you have HIV-1, you need to take additional medications alongside Descovy to properly treat the infection. Descovy alone is not a complete treatment for HIV-1.
  • You are unsure of your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you must use other HIV-1 medications along with Descovy for effective treatment. Descovy is only intended to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV-1 before infection.
  • Before taking Descovy, inform your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, especially if you:

  • Have kidney issues
  • Are experiencing flu-like symptoms
  • Have liver problems, including HBV infection
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
  • This medication does not prevent the spread of HIV.

Do not engage in unprotected sex or share razors or toothbrushes. Consult your doctor for guidance on preventing HIV transmission during sex. Never share needles.

Does it have any side effects?

It is important to note that all drugs have corresponding side effects and adverse reactions. Additional information may be obtained when you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
      Common side effects may include:
  • Diarrhea (more common in PrEP)
  • Headache, dizziness, or feeling depressed
  • Stomach pain
  • Rash
  • Nausea (more common in HIV-1 treatment)
  • Sleep issues (insomnia)
    • Serious side effects may include:
  • Worsening of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
  • Immune System Changes
  • Kidney Issues
  • Lactic Acidosis
  • Liver Problems
  • This may not include all available information. Please consult your doctor for more details on potential side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Certain medicines may not be safe to use together. Some drugs can alter the blood levels of other medications, potentially increasing side effects or reducing their effectiveness.

Emtricitabine and tenofovir can cause kidney damage, especially when taken with certain medications for infections, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, or pain and arthritis (such as Advil).

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, especially:

  • Seizure medications such as Carbamazepine and Phenobarbital
  • Other antiviral medicines for treating hepatitis C or HIV
  • St. John's wort
  • This list is not exhaustive, Not all possible interactions are listed here.

    How should I store it?

Store your Descovy tablets in the bottle with the cap securely closed until you are ready to take them. Keep Descovy tablets in a cool, dry place, ensuring the temperature remains below 30°C.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Descovy, monitor the patient and seek medical assistance immediately.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: It is not known how Descovy may affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: Descovy passes into breast milk. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. There may be risks associated with breastfeeding while taking Descovy and having HIV.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
