Why is Haldol prescribed?

Haldol (Haloperidol) is an antipsychotic medication that helps reduce brain excitement. It is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, manage motor (movement) and vocal tics (e.g., in Tourette's syndrome), and address severe behavioral issues in children. Haldol is not approved for use in older adults with dementia due to an increased risk of death during treatment.

What does it do?

Haloperidol is a first-generation (typical) antipsychotic medication. It works by blocking certain areas of the brain where the natural chemical dopamine acts, thereby reducing its effects on the body. Dopamine plays a role in influencing behavior and thinking.

How should I take it?

Take Haldol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dosing for adult is 0.5mg to 5mg up to 3 times a day. Your doctor may increase your dose if needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 100 mg per day.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss Haldol, take it as soon as possible. If it's nearly time for your next dose, just take that one. Do not double dose.

What are the special precautions before taking Haldol?

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, your current and previous medical history.

You should not use Haldol if you are allergic to it or have:

  • Parkinson's disease, or
  • Certain conditions affecting your central nervous system (such as severe drowsiness or alcohol use).

Haldol may increase the risk of death in older adults with dementia-related psychosis and is not approved for this use.

Inform your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Seizures
  • Breast cancer
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Low blood pressure
  • Heart problems or angina (chest pain)
  • Long QT syndrome (either personally or in your family)
  • An electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium or magnesium levels)

Taking antipsychotic medication in the last three months of pregnancy may lead to serious issues for the newborn. If you become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. Do not stop the medication without consulting your doctor.

Does it have any side effects?

High doses or long-term use of haloperidol can lead to a serious movement disorder that may be irreversible. The longer you use Haldol, the higher the risk of developing this disorder, particularly for women and older adults.

    Common side effects may include:
  • Breast enlargement or irregular menstrual periods
  • Headache
  • Restlessness or anxiety
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness or spinning sensation
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements
    Serious side effects may include:
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements in your face (such as chewing, blinking, or eye movement)
  • Rapid or pounding heartbeats, or sudden dizziness (feeling like you might faint)
  • Low white blood cell counts, indicated by fever, chills, mouth sores, or skin sores
  • Severe nervous system reaction, such as very stiff muscles, tremors, or feeling like you might pass out

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor for advice on managing side effects.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Haldol can cause serious heart problems, and your risk may be higher if you are also taking certain medications for infections, asthma, heart conditions, mental health disorders, cancer, or HIV.

Taking Haldol with other drugs that cause drowsiness can increase this risk. Consult your doctor before using opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, or medications for anxiety or seizures. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, particularly:

  • Blood thinners, such as warfarin or Jantoven
  • Lithium
  • Rifampin
  • Seizure medications
  • Medications for Parkinson's disease

This is not a complete list of drugs that may interact with Haldol. Other prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as vitamins and herbal products, may also affect Haldol. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep away from light and ensure the container is tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

Seek emergency medical help immediately. An overdose of Haldol can be life-threatening.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: It is unclear whether Haloperidol could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Taking Haloperidol during the third trimester may lead to symptoms in the newborn, such as agitation, breathing issues, or feeding difficulties. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding: Do not take Haloperidol while breastfeeding, as it can pass into breast milk. Let your healthcare provider know if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
