Why is Revia prescribed?

Revia (Naltrexone) is a unique medication that prevents the effects of other narcotic drugs and alcohol and is used to treat addiction to narcotics or alcohol.

What does it do?

Revia tablets contain Naltrexone Hydrochloride as the active ingredient. It is an opioid antagonist, which means it counteracts the effects of opioid drugs (like heroin) on the body and prevents the feelings of euphoria or "high" caused by these opioids.

How should I take it?

Revia is taken as oral tablets usually once a day. The dosage and treatment duration will still depends on the amount prescribed by your doctor.

You should not stop taking Revia or adjust your dose without consulting your doctor first. If you discontinue Revia and return to using opiate drugs, you may become more sensitive to opiates.

What if I missed a dose?

If you miss a dose of Revia, take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed one.

What are the special precautions before taking Revia?

Inform your doctor about all your health conditions or any allergies, as well as any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and supplements you are taking. This will help them assess if Naltrexone is suitable for you.

Be sure to specifically mention if you have had or currently have the following:

  • A history of suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Current or past kidney issues
  • Depression
  • Liver problems
  • Use of prescription or illicit opioids
  • Current Opioid Use and Dependence: Individuals currently using prescription or illicit opioids, including buprenorphine, should avoid taking naltrexone. Taking naltrexone while on opioids may trigger withdrawal symptoms, potentially requiring hospital care. Before starting naltrexone, make sure to inform your healthcare provider about any use of prescription or illicit opioids.

Opioid Withdrawal: If you have been using prescription or illicit opioids and suddenly stop, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. Individuals undergoing opioid withdrawal should not take naltrexone. Before taking naltrexone, inform your healthcare provider if you have any symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Restlessness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Shakiness
  • Stomach cramps
  • Twitches
  • If the symptoms do not go away or are life-threatening, immediately stop taking the medication.

Does it have any side effects?

If you feel unwell while taking Revia, inform your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. Like all medications, Revia may cause side effects in some individuals. The more common side effects include:

  • Delayed ejaculation, reduced potency
  • Fatigue, anxiety, irritability, difficulty sleeping, feelings of sadness, chills, or increased energy
  • Headache, nervousness, dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain, or cramps
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Thirst, loss of appetite
  • If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately or Emergency Department:

  • Wheezing
  • Sudden and severe pinkish, itchy swelling of the skin
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Revia may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Be cautious until you know how it affects you. If you consume alcohol while taking Revia, your blood alcohol level will rise as it would if you were not taking the medication.

Other side effects not listed above may also occur. Let your doctor know if you notice anything else that makes you feel unwell.

Is it safe to take it with another drug?

Always inform your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, or other supplements you are taking. Specifically, discuss with your doctor if you are using any of the following before taking naltrexone:

  • Disulfiram: A medication used to help individuals with alcohol use disorder maintain sobriety.
  • Thioridazine: A medication for certain mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia.
  • Mixed agonist/antagonist or partial agonist opioid analgesics: Medications like buprenorphine (Sublocade, Butrans), butorphanol, and others, used to treat pain or opioid use disorder.
  • Opioids: Medications such as oxycodone, codeine, methadone, morphine, diphenoxylate, fentanyl, or loperamide, used for pain, diarrhea, or cough.
  • This may not be a complete list of medications that could interact with naltrexone. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    How should I store it?

Store your tablets in their original pack until you're ready to take them. Keep the pack in a cool, dry place with a temperature below 25°C. Ensure it is kept out of reach of children.

What action should I take in case of overdose?

If you or someone else has taken too much Revia, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency department.

Is it safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnancy: The effects of naltrexone on pregnancy or an unborn baby are unknown. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. They will advise you on whether you should take naltrexone during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: It is unclear if naltrexone passes into breast milk. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. They will guide you on whether it is safe to take Revia (Naltrexone) while breastfeeding.

Canadian Prescription Drug Store dispenses medications from our fully licensed and independently verified pharmacy partners around the world from Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Mauritius.

Legal disclaimer: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian online pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. However, many legal experts disagree with the FDA's position in this regard stating that such importation is permitted under certain federal and state laws. Several State governments and consumer rights groups actively promote the importation of medications. The FDA itself provides the public information on how to import medications safely. Furthermore, there is no record of any US individual being prosecuted by the FDA for importing non-controlled prescription drugs for their personal use.
